　　《诗经》中曾以雉之朝飞作为爱情生活的象征。琴曲继承了这一主题，并流传着两个不同的故事。一个故事是说：卫女殉情而死，她的褓母在墓前哀伤地奏起她生前抚弄的琴，忽见两只雉鸟双双飞去。
　　
　　（杨雄《琴清英》）另一个故事说：牧犊子终年放牧打柴，直至暮年仍是孤身一人，他见雉鸟都是成双成队地愉快飞翔，非常羡慕，愈加感到自己的孤独凄凉，伤心地唱到：“雉朝飞兮鸣相和，雌雄群兮于山阿，我独伤兮未有室，时将暮兮可奈何？”
　　
　　（晋崔豹：《古今注》）现存琴谱沿用了后一个解题。魏武帝时有个卢姓宫女，擅长此曲。
　　
　　（《乐府古题要解》）可见它是渊远流长的古曲。清代琴家称赞说：“极乎曲之圣，而音之神也。”“逸韵幽致，含恨无限。”
　　
　　（《琴苑心传》后记）“奇音妙趣，《雉朝飞》为最。”
　　
　　（《诚一堂琴谱》后记）存谱初见于《神奇秘谱》，明末的《松弦馆琴谱》因其节奏急促而不予收录。
