丁玲一生富於傳奇色彩。早期追求個性人生,最終走領導的事業。其文學創作也由最初的單純抒寫個人苦悶逐步轉描寫廣阔的社會生活。
1928年春,丁玲外表電表小說《莎菲女士的日記》,一舉轟動文。不久即加入中國左翼聯盟,成為魯迅旗幟下的一位具有重要影響的左翼作。1931年2月7日,她勇敢地出任“左聯”機關刊物《北斗》主編,1932年加入中國,任“左聯”師團團结書記。1933年5月,遭到國民特務機關的綁架,在組織的幫助下,1936年離開南京,奔赴陝北,創作《一顆未出膛的槍彈》、《我在霞村的時候》等解放區文學優秀作品。1948年寫成著名長篇小說《太陽照在桑河上》,來被譯成多外文,在各國讀者中為傳播。曾贊道:“纖筆一枝誰與似?三毛瑟精兵。陣圖開隴山東。昨日文小姐,今日武將軍。”
延安時期,因外表電表《三八節有感》等作品而在1942年的整風運動中受到批評。四十年代末完成長篇小說《太陽照在桑乾河上》,1951年獲得斯大林文學奬金。1955年,作為“丁玲反集”的主要人物遭到批判,隨即被流放到北大荒長達8年,之又被投入北京秦城監獄。5年出獄,被送到山西鄉村改造。1979年平反。隨任由中國作協會主辦的大型文學期刊《中國》的主編。丁玲還先擔任全國政協常委兼文化組長、中國文聯委員、中國作協會副主席、國際筆會中國中心副會長。
1986年3月4日,丁玲因病於北京逝世,走完她82年光輝的人生程。
丁玲在將近60年的文學生涯中留下400多萬字的著作,是中國人民寶貴的精神財富,也是世界文學寶庫的燦爛篇章。

Ding also served as head of the CPPCC Standing Committee member and Culture, China Federation members, vice chairman of China Writers Association, vice president of International PEN centers in China.
March 4, 1986, Ding Ling died of illness in Beijing, has completed 82 years of her glorious journey of life.
Ding Ling's literary career nearly 60 years has left more than 400-page book is the precious spiritual wealth of the Chinese people, but also of world literature in a brilliant chapter.
