　　睿宗李旦是唐朝第五位皇帝，他和他的哥哥中宗李旦一样，都是两度为帝，兄弟二人还有极为相似的一点：在帝位上默默无为，形同牌位。当然李旦比李显幸运的是没有韦后、安乐公主那样毒辣的妻女，相反倒有一位“重子”——后来的唐玄宗李隆基。也许正是因为兄弟二人相似处太多，两《唐书》干脆把二人的本纪合在一起。尽管两人作为皇帝的政绩都接近于零，而李旦的个人生活相对平坦得多，总体而言，李旦比李显幸运得多。
　　李旦是高宗李治和武则天所生的第四子，而在高宗的八个儿子中也是最小的。刚出生时起名旭轮，封殷王，后来改封冀王，去掉“旭”字，单名轮字。上元二年改封相王，仪凤三年又改封豫王，改名旦。
　　中宗嗣圣元年（684），武则天以皇太后的身份临朝称制，二月份便废黜中宗李显，改立豫王李旦为皇帝，却让李旦“居于别殿”，政事决于太后，李旦“不得有所预”。这就明确告诉他：只允许他做一个牌位皇帝，绝不许他乱说乱动。其实有了三个同胞哥哥的覆辙，就是重赏鼓励，李旦也绝不敢看上一眼武则天手中的权柄，遑言触摸了。
　　《新唐书·睿宗本纪》称李旦：谦恭孝友，好学，工草隶，尤爱文字训诂之书，倒是一位学者型的皇帝，不过他的学问始终没表露出来，倒是韬晦保身的功夫堪称一流。
　　“伴君如伴虎”，而伴武则天这样的“君”，就不是伴一般的虎了，伴的是疯虎，尽管武则天和李旦是至亲母子，可是“皇家无亲”在武则天身上得到了最为彻底的验证。从公元684年至公元705年，李旦在武则天身边呆了整整二十二年，中间经历周武革命、武承嗣夺嫡等政治风浪，李旦居然能安然无事，躲过一波波劫难，足证其不平凡。
