丁玲一生富于传奇色彩。早期追求个性人生,最终走向领导的事业。其文学创作也由最初的单纯抒写个人苦闷逐步转向描写广阔的社会生活。
1928年春,丁玲发表小说《莎菲女士的日记》,一举轰动文坛。不久即加入中国左翼联盟,成为鲁迅旗帜下的一位具有重要影响的左翼作家。1931年2月7日,她勇敢地出任“左联”机关刊物《北斗》主编,1932年加入中国,任“左联”党团书记。1933年5月,遭到国民党特务机关的绑架,在党组织的帮助下,1936年秋离开南京,奔赴陕北,创作《一颗未出膛的枪弹》、《我在霞村的时候》等解放区文学优秀作品。1948年写成著名长篇小说《太阳照在桑干河上》,后来被译成多种外文,在各国读者中广为传播。曾赞道:“纤笔一枝谁与似?三千毛瑟精兵。阵图开向陇山东。昨日文小姐,今日武将军。”
延安时期,因发表《三八节有感》等作品而在1942年的整风运动中受到批评。四十年代末完成长篇小说《太阳照在桑乾河上》,1951年获得斯大林文学奖金。1955年,作为“丁玲反党集团”的主要人物遭到批判,随即被流放到北大荒长达8年,之后又被投入北京秦城监狱。5年后出狱,被送到山西乡村改造。1979年平反。随后任由中国作家协会主办的大型文学期刊《中国》的主编。丁玲还先后担任全国政协常委兼文化组长、中国文联委员、中国作家协会副主席、国际笔会中国中心副会长。
1986年3月4日,丁玲因病于北京逝世,走完了她82年光辉的人生历程。
丁玲在将近60年的文学生涯中留下了400多万字的著作,是中国人民宝贵的精神财富,也是世界文学宝库里的灿烂篇章。

Ding also served as head of the CPPCC Standing Committee member and Culture, China Federation members, vice chairman of China Writers Association, vice president of International PEN centers in China.
March 4, 1986, Ding Ling died of illness in Beijing, has completed 82 years of her glorious journey of life.
Ding Ling's literary career nearly 60 years has left more than 400-page book is the precious spiritual wealth of the Chinese people, but also of world literature in a brilliant chapter.
