萧纲蕭綱最早封為晉安王，曾經擔任過南徐州刺史，並且曾經參與北伐；531年蕭統病故之後被封為皇太子。
548年侯景叛亂，攻陷臺城後，梁武帝於549年憂憤而死，但是侯景認為目前仍然不能自立為皇帝，便擁立蕭綱為皇帝，次年改元大寶。但是蕭綱不過是侯景的傀儡。551年，侯景派人廢蕭綱為晉安王，改立豫章王蕭棟為皇帝；蕭綱被囚禁於永福省，蕭綱被廢後兩個月，被侯景派人以棉被悶死，享年49歲。
蕭綱本人文學造詣很高，雅好詩賦，詠物、宮體、閨怨之作在質量上皆遠逾其父，其中五言詩最多，並且與徐陵、庾信等人形成宮體詩的流派。侯景兵圍建康期間，曾經“募人出燒東宮，東宮臺殿遂盡。所聚百櫥圖籍，一皆灰燼”。
梁代文學家。即南朝梁簡文帝。字世纘。南蘭陵（今江蘇武進）人。梁武帝第三子。由於長兄蕭統早死,他在中大通三年(531)被立為太子。太清三年(549)，侯景之亂，梁武帝被囚餓死,蕭綱即位，大寶二年(551)為侯景所害。
自東晉南遷以來，漢族政權偏安江左，歷代雖間或有奮發有為的君主，但大多數帝王貴族都安於逸樂，縱情聲色。反映在文學創作上，便往往以浮豔的辭句來表現空虛放蕩的內容。蕭綱在蕃及做太子時期，寫作了大量這類題材的詩。當時的屬官徐□、庾肩吾等又推波助瀾,文學侍從之臣競相仿作,形成"宮體"詩的流派。今存蕭綱作品中，象描寫女性聲容情態的《詠內人晝眠》、《詠舞》、《美人晨妝》等，都屬於這一類。
當時文人創作,已有不少以邊塞為主題的樂府詩,蕭綱也有一些這類作品,如《從軍行》、《隴西行》、《雁門太守行》、《度關山》等，在某些寫作技巧上，開了唐人邊塞詩的先河。他的詠物詩，寫得也還輕巧，雖然輕細不足道，但這樣的題材對後世也有一定影響。
蕭綱的文學主張，在當時也具有代表意義。他既反對質直懦鈍，又反對浮疏闡緩(《與湘東王書》)，正面提出"立身先須謹重，文章且須放蕩"（《誡當陽公大心書》），和蕭繹主張的"情靈搖蕩"互為呼應。《南史·梁簡文帝紀》記其有文集100捲，其他著作600餘捲。存世的作品，經明代張溥輯為《梁簡文集》，收入《漢魏六朝百三傢集》。
精醫，著有《沐浴經》三捲、《如意方》十捲，均佚。
一 齊梁時代，雖然整個社會更替迭代、動蕩不寧，但是南朝偏安江左，有比北朝安定的社會環境，農業、手工業發展，經濟繁榮帶來了人口稠密的商業都市，在物質生活相對富足的基礎上，南朝君臣日益荒淫腐朽，耽於酒色。帝王荒淫放蕩的生活為宮體詩的産生提供了土壤和生活基礎。同時，文筆說和聲律論的産生，使文學和詩歌形式趨於獨立，文學創作進入一個更為自覺更為解放的時期。詩人和詩歌作品大量産生。
二 至齊、梁之世，以皇室成員為中心的文學集團對文學尤其是詩歌發展的影響更是深刻。其中規模最大、影響最顯著者，主要有三大文學集團：南齊竟陵王蕭子良文學集團、梁代蕭衍、蕭統文學集團，蕭綱文學集團。
三 處於梁代後期的蕭綱文學集團的詩歌創作最為繁榮，其影響亦更深遠。
四 蕭綱四歲封晉安王，七歲為雲麾將軍，領石頭戍軍事，量置佐吏。此時是蕭綱“有詩癖”之始。

（4）蕭綱11歲為宣惠將軍、丹陽尹時，有庾肩吾等人入幕；18歲為南徐刺史時，又有王規等人入幕，從而使蕭綱文學集團初具規模。
（5）從普通四年至中大通二年（523～530），蕭綱在雍州刺死任上七年。此間其幕府中又有：
劉孝儀、劉孝威等人入幕。其文學集團已自然形成，並且詩歌創作也日漸繁榮。

五 為詩本自“傷於輕靡”的蕭綱，入住東宮後，宮體詩的創作更逾往時。
（1）所謂宮體詩，就其內容而言，主要是以宮廷生活為描寫對象，具體的題材不外乎詠物與描寫女性。可以說，他們對女性的審美關照，同對器物的審美關照的心理是一樣的。而在情調上，傷於輕豔，風格上比較柔靡緩慢。在描寫女性的詩歌當中，絶大部分是將目光停留在女性上的生活圈內，包括她們的容貌、體態、服飾以及器物等方面。這類詩歌的共同藝術特點是：註重詞藻、對偶、聲律。
（2）宮體詩中有少數作品表現宮中淫蕩的生活，如蕭綱的《詠內人晝眠》、《和徐錄事見內人臥》、《率而為詠》、《和湘東王名士悅傾城》。蕭綱曾說：“立身之道與文章異；立身先須謹重，文章且須放蕩。”（《誡當陽公大心書》）儘管人們對於“放蕩”一詞的理解不同，但是表現淫蕩生活內容的作品在梁陳宮體詩中是存在的。
（3）詠物之作在宮體詩中占的比重相當大，這些詩的共同特點是內容貧乏，單純詠物而毫無寄托，衹講究詞藻與對偶。
（4）蕭綱之外宮體詩的另一位代表人物徐擒，今存詩歌僅五首，其中四首皆為詠物詩，其情調與風格，與蕭綱完全一致。其他宮體詩人的作品，大抵皆如此，不脫輕豔之風。這種風氣一直影響到隋及初唐。
（5）然而就藝術形式而言，宮體詩仍有貢獻。最突出的一點，就是宮體詩發展了吳哥西麯的藝術形式，並繼承了永明體的藝術探索而更趨格律化。至於其語言的風華流麗、對的工穩精巧以及用典隸事等方面的藝術探索和積纍，也同樣為唐代詩人提供了足資藉鑒的藝術經驗。
六 齊梁時期文學集團的詩歌創作活動，方式大體一致。從現存詩歌來看，應製、應教、同題、共賦、相互唱和的作品居多，而且爭勝鬥豔的色彩較為濃重。由於生活範圍和生活方式的限製，他們的視野大多停留在皇宮苑囿、帝王府第或藩鎮使府之內，因而詩歌題材單調狹窄，內容脫離社會生活。為了迎合帝王的口味，文學集團內部的詩歌創作很少有真正的吟詠性情之作。因而這種創作方式帶來的結果，便是審美趣味和藝術風格的大體一致，湮沒了詩人的個性色彩。這也是那個時代難以産生大詩人的一個根本原因。
