近年来，“幻想小说”、“幽默小说”、“推理小说”、“历险小说”等等说法，在我国少年小说创作、出版、评论界，成了更为普遍和流行的分类用语。一些出版社还纷纷以此为选题角度，策划、组织并陆续推出了一套套艺术特征和风格色彩十分鲜明的原创性少儿文学丛书。很显然，这种分类方式与早先的分类方式相比，它对作品的艺术品性的指涉性和提示性都大大增强了。在这些类型用语的强有力的理论抓握和美学暗示之下，一批批具有独特艺术品性的小说被召唤、聚拢在相应的丛书之中，呈现在读者的面前。
从文学史的角度看，历险小说当然不是少儿文学的一个新品种。“历险”作为一种特殊的文学构成元素，事实上一直是、中外文学发展史中一个重要的叙事原型。其最初的叙事胚胎在神话时代就已开始孕育了。此后，由“历险”串连起来的中外文学名著可以开列出一份很长的清单。例如位居我国古代四大文学名著之列的明代长篇神魔小说《西游记》，同时亦堪称一部杰出的历险小说。小说描述了唐僧、孙悟空、猪八戒、沙和尚师徒四人去西天取经一路上降妖伏魔的故事。沿途他们经历了九九八十一难，最后到达西天灵山，求得真经。小说中那些围绕着险山恶水、妖洞魔窟所展开的情节描绘，为作品平添了巨大而丰富的险势险趣。在西方，文学对历险的表现同样有着久远的历史，古希腊神话里那些具有人格特点的超人，就大多是一些勇敢的冒险家与强悍的征服者。这些超人传说(如关于赫拉克勒斯的，关于猎取金羊毛的，关于特洛伊战争的，等等)都有一个共同之处，即其主题都与表现冒险、掠夺和征服有关。自哥伦布发现美洲后，更是出现了许多反映伟大历险经历的作品，如迪亚斯·德尔·卡斯蒂洛的描
