近年來，“幻想小說”、“幽默小說”、“推理小說”、“歷險小說”等等說法，在我國少年小說創作、出版、評論界，成了更為普遍和流行的分類用語。一些出版社還紛紛以此為選題角度，策劃、組織並陸續推出了一套套藝術特徵和風格色彩十分鮮明的原創性少兒文學叢書。很顯然，這種分類方式與早先的分類方式相比，它對作品的藝術品性的指涉性和提示性都大大增強了。在這些類型用語的強有力的理論抓握和美學暗示之下，一批批具有獨特藝術品性的小說被召喚、聚攏在相應的叢書之中，呈現在讀者的面前。
從文學史的角度看，歷險小說當然不是少兒文學的一個新品種。“歷險”作為一種特殊的文學構成元素，事實上一直是、中外文學發展史中一個重要的敘事原型。其最初的敘事胚胎在神話時代就已開始孕育了。此後，由“歷險”串連起來的中外文學名著可以開列出一份很長的清單。例如位居我國古代四大文學名著之列的明代長篇神魔小說《西遊記》，同時亦堪稱一部傑出的歷險小說。小說描述了唐僧、孫悟空、豬八戒、沙和尚師徒四人去西天取經一路上降妖伏魔的故事。沿途他們經歷了九九八十一難，最後到達西天靈山，求得真經。小說中那些圍繞着險山惡水、妖洞魔窟所展開的情節描繪，為作品平添了巨大而豐富的險勢險趣。在西方，文學對歷險的表現同樣有着久遠的歷史，古希臘神話裏那些具有人格特點的超人，就大多是一些勇敢的冒險傢與強悍的徵服者。這些超人傳說(如關於赫拉剋勒斯的，關於獵取金羊毛的，關於特洛伊戰爭的，等等)都有一個共同之處，即其主題都與表現冒險、掠奪和徵服有關。自哥倫布發現美洲後，更是出現了許多反映偉大歷險經歷的作品，如迪亞斯·德爾·卡斯蒂洛的描
