漢劉嚮《新序·雜事一》：“司君之過而書之，日有記也”。後稱每天記事的本子或每天所遇到的和所做的事情的記錄為“日記”。

【定義】
從字面理解的話，大概就是記下每天發生的事情。日記即每天所遇到的和所做的事情的記錄，有的兼記對這些事情的感受。每天或經常把發生的事、處理的事務或觀察的東西寫下來的記錄，尤指個人活動、思考或感覺的每日記錄。
日記也指用來記錄其內容的載體，作為一種文體，屬於記敘文性質的應用文。日記的內容，來源於我們對生活的觀察，因此，可以記事，可以寫人，可以狀物，可以寫景，當然也可以記述活動，凡是自己在一天中做過的，或看到的，或聽到的，或想到的，都可以是日記的內容。每年的高考作文都會出現以日記的形式出現的作文，經常寫日記，對寫作很有幫助。
【分類】
日記分為生活日記、工作日記、觀察日記，也可分為心情日記，自然日記，有的已經是寶貴的氣象學資料，還有瑣事日記，寫作水平不一樣，日記質量也就不一樣，例如雷鋒日記，就會出現在教科書中。
【寫法】
日記顧名思義就是一日一記。那麽日記是不是衹能寫當天的事呢？不是的。應該也可以寫以前的事，如果單篇幅的日記，或是當天無事可寫，或是以前發生的事未及時去寫，都可以在以後的時間裏，經過回憶思考再寫下來。寫的內容不需要用很好的詞組來修飾，這畢竟衹是個人在一天內把所做的事情用文字來表達並保存下來。衹要連貫，讓人讀起來有一種很舒服的感覺。隨心所欲--想到什麽就寫什麽。創造一個輕鬆的閱讀環境便已足夠。
雖然日記不一定衹寫當天的事，還是當天的事當天寫好。不要非把當天的事放到以後再去寫。
日記的寫法跟作文差不多，也要有中心，有重點，有條理，也可分段，語名要寫得明白、通順，書寫要工整。不過日記比作文靈活得多，一篇日記最好是寫一件你認為最重要、感觸最深的事。當然記兩三件事也可以，日記一般不要太長，幾句話可以幾百字也可以，不必勉強湊數。寫日記還要註意兩個問題：一個是要勤於觀察，善於分辨，及時記載。從表面上看，好像每天生活裏處處有趣事。二是持之於恆，既然是日記，最好每天必寫。寫日記的形式要活潑一些，寫法也不要拘於一種形式。開始先寫短一些，時間長了，養成習慣，你就會覺得越寫越有意思。

日記是寫自己心理活動的，有時也像出氣筒一樣，是傾訴自己心事的好對象。也正因為日記本的這個特殊功能，有的傢長老師會偷看自己的孩子、學生到底在寫什麽，有沒有在駡自己。如果有，他們就一定會對孩子大打出手。這種行為造成了學生不敢寫真心話，怕被傢長、老師看見。希望老師傢長給孩子一個開放的空間。
