汉刘向《新序·杂事一》：“司君之过而书之，日有记也”。后称每天记事的本子或每天所遇到的和所做的事情的记录为“日记”。

【定义】
从字面理解的话，大概就是记下每天发生的事情。日记即每天所遇到的和所做的事情的记录，有的兼记对这些事情的感受。每天或经常把发生的事、处理的事务或观察的东西写下来的记录，尤指个人活动、思考或感觉的每日记录。
日记也指用来记录其内容的载体，作为一种文体，属于记叙文性质的应用文。日记的内容，来源于我们对生活的观察，因此，可以记事，可以写人，可以状物，可以写景，当然也可以记述活动，凡是自己在一天中做过的，或看到的，或听到的，或想到的，都可以是日记的内容。每年的高考作文都会出现以日记的形式出现的作文，经常写日记，对写作很有帮助。
【分类】
日记分为生活日记、工作日记、观察日记，也可分为心情日记，自然日记，有的已经是宝贵的气象学资料，还有琐事日记，写作水平不一样，日记质量也就不一样，例如雷锋日记，就会出现在教科书中。
【写法】
日记顾名思义就是一日一记。那么日记是不是只能写当天的事呢？不是的。应该也可以写以前的事，如果单篇幅的日记，或是当天无事可写，或是以前发生的事未及时去写，都可以在以后的时间里，经过回忆思考再写下来。写的内容不需要用很好的词组来修饰，这毕竟只是个人在一天内把所做的事情用文字来表达并保存下来。只要连贯，让人读起来有一种很舒服的感觉。随心所欲--想到什么就写什么。创造一个轻松的阅读环境便已足够。
虽然日记不一定只写当天的事，还是当天的事当天写好。不要非把当天的事放到以后再去写。
日记的写法跟作文差不多，也要有中心，有重点，有条理，也可分段，语名要写得明白、通顺，书写要工整。不过日记比作文灵活得多，一篇日记最好是写一件你认为最重要、感触最深的事。当然记两三件事也可以，日记一般不要太长，几句话可以几百字也可以，不必勉强凑数。写日记还要注意两个问题：一个是要勤于观察，善于分辨，及时记载。从表面上看，好像每天生活里处处有趣事。二是持之于恒，既然是日记，最好每天必写。写日记的形式要活泼一些，写法也不要拘于一种形式。开始先写短一些，时间长了，养成习惯，你就会觉得越写越有意思。

日记是写自己心理活动的，有时也像出气筒一样，是倾诉自己心事的好对象。也正因为日记本的这个特殊功能，有的家长老师会偷看自己的孩子、学生到底在写什么，有没有在骂自己。如果有，他们就一定会对孩子大打出手。这种行为造成了学生不敢写真心话，怕被家长、老师看见。希望老师家长给孩子一个开放的空间。
