1213年，成吉思汗分兵伐金，托雷從其父率領中路軍，攻剋宣德府，再攻德興府。托雷與駙馬赤駒先登，拔其城。即而揮師南下，撥涿州、易州，殘破河北、山東諸郡縣。1219年，從成吉思汗西徵，攻陷不花剌、撒馬爾幹。1221年，分領一軍進入呼羅珊境，陷馬魯、尼沙不兒，渡搠搠闌河，降也裏。遂與成吉思汗合兵攻塔裏寒寨。
按照蒙古習俗，幼子繼承父業，而年長諸子則分析外出、自謀生計。故成吉思汗生前分封諸子，托雷留置父母身邊，繼承父親所有在斡難和怯緑連的斡耳朵、牧地及軍隊。成吉思汗留下的軍隊共有12.9人萬。其中1.1萬的精銳俱由托雷繼承。1227年成吉思汗死後，由托雷監國，直至1229年在選舉大汗的忽裏臺時，推窩闊臺即大汗位。
1231年，與窩闊臺分道伐金，托雷總右軍自陝西鳳翔渡渭水，過寶雞，入大散關。11月，蒙古軍假道南宋境，沿漢水而下，經興元（今陝西漢中）、洋州（今陝西洋縣）在均州（今湖北均縣西北）、光化（今湖北光化北）一帶，渡漢水，迂回北上入金境。1232年初與金軍在均州（今河南禹縣）遭遇。托雷乘雪夜天寒大敗金將完顔合達、移剌蒲阿、完顔陳和尚於三峰山，盡殲金軍精銳。此役畢，托雷與自白坡渡河南下的窩闊臺軍會合。同年北返，病死途中。
至元三年（公元1266年）子忽必烈在位時，被追謚為景襄皇帝，廟號睿宗。
後嗣
拖雷數子皆有所成，蒙哥（憲宗）、忽必烈（世祖）相繼稱汗或稱帝，蒙元皇帝由拖雷一係繼承。旭烈兀亦開創了伊兒汗國，阿裏不哥在蒙哥死後被蒙古本土的貴族推舉為大汗。
