冲龄践祚
宋咸淳十年（1274年）十月，宋度宗驾崩，年四岁的赵㬎在奸相贾似道的扶持下登基做皇帝，是为宋恭帝，改明年为德祐元年。祖母谢太皇太后、母亲全太后垂帘听政。但军国大权依然在贾似道之手。
当时元朝军已平定中国北方和西南，在取得南下最重要通道襄阳城的控制权之后，渡过长江向南宋首都临安（今杭州）进发。谢太皇太后一面在全国通令“勤王”，一面向元军乞和。势如破竹的元军在击破各地的防线，相继降服了长江中游诸州。1275年，贾似道率领的3万大军在芜湖与元军对战大败。不久，谢太皇太后和宋恭帝在舆论压力下诛贾似道，不过为时已晚，宋朝亡国在即。同年年中，元军已经占领了江东（今日的江苏省）大半的领土。1276年1月18日伯颜率领的元军兵临临安。南宋朝廷遣陆秀夫求和称侄不成，只好向元军投降。同年，谢太皇太后抱着五岁的小皇帝宋恭帝赵㬎出城向元军投降。南宋残余势力在福建、广东抗元。1279年，陆秀夫携年仅八岁的小皇帝赵昺在崖山蹈海自尽，南宋最终灭亡。
入元降封瀛国公
宋亡后，宋恭帝曾徙居元大都、上都、吐蕃、甘州（一说还有谦州，今俄罗斯图瓦共和国境内）等地，是中国历史上游历最远的一位汉人皇帝。
恭帝北狩
恭帝降元后，元将巴延促其北上入觐。帝于至元十三年（宋德祐二年，1276年）丙子三月从临安启程，前往上都。太皇太后谢氏以疾留内。太后全氏、隆国夫人黄氏（度宗母）、福王赵与芮（理宗弟、度宗父、恭帝祖）、沂王赵乃猷、枢密院参知政事高应松、谢堂、知临安府翁仲德及汪元量等朝臣、宫人随同北上（见刘一清钱塘遗事）。渡江后，宋将李庭芝、苗再成等谋夺驾，不克。五月，过大都，赴上都。丙申，见元世祖忽必烈于上都大安殿。忽必烈封恭帝为瀛国公，妻以公主，诏优待之，使居大都；福王赵与芮受封平原郡公（汪元量《水云集》湖州歌八十一：“福王又拜平原郡，幼主新封瀛国公”）。至元十九年，中书省奏请徙瀛国公居上都，诏许之。后元仁宗延祐中，随高丽国王王璋入朝的高丽人权汉功，见瀛国公故宅尚存，作《瀛国公第盆梅》咏之。
入遁吐蕃
忽必烈欲保全亡宋宗室。至元二十五年（1288年）十月诏遣瀛国公赵㬎入吐蕃习梵书、西蕃字经（一说瀛国公自求入吐蕃学佛法）。十二月启程，由脱思麻（今青海省海南州一带）入乌思藏，驻锡萨斯迦大寺，号木波讲师。后为萨斯迦大寺住持。尝取汉藏佛经互译比勘，校订异文。法号合尊。
赐死河西
英宗至治三年（1323年）四月（据释念常《佛祖历代通载》），赐瀛国公赵㬎死于河西（今甘肃河西走廊张掖），年五十二岁。明人多认为瀛国公以诗贾祸。明初僧人释无愠《山庵杂录》云：“瀛国公为僧后，至英宗朝，适兴吟诗云：“寄语林和靖，梅开几度花。黄金台上客，无复得还家。”谍者以其意在讽动江南人心，闻之于上，收斩之。既而上悔，出内帑黄金，诏江南善书僧儒集燕京，书大藏经云。”案：陶宗仪《辍耕录》引此诗，作：“寄语林和靖。梅花几度开。黄金台下客，应是不归来。”并云“此宋幼主在京师所作也”。明人瞿佑《归田诗话》引作：“黄金台上客，底事又思家。归问林和靖，寒梅几度花。”谓瀛国公以此诗赠汪元量。藏文史书则谓其罪名为聚众谋反。元史英宗纪可旁证瀛国公卒年：“至治三年四月壬戌朔，敕天下诸司命僧诵经十万部。……敕京师万安、庆寿、圣安、普庆四寺，扬子江金山寺、五台万圣祐国寺，做水陆佛事七昼夜。”

元顺帝孛儿只斤妥欢帖睦尔，杂史传为恭帝幼子。
后世盛传宋恭帝为元顺帝妥欢帖睦尔之生父。元文宗曾布告中外，引顺帝乳母夫之言，称明宗在漠北时，素谓太子（妥欢帖睦尔）非己子，遂徙于高丽，后迁静江。元末明初人权衡撰《庚申外史》，谓瀛国公驻锡甘州山寺（元时称十字寺，即张掖大佛寺）时，封地位于汪古部旧地及居延一带的赵王曾以一回回女子与之（即顺帝生母迈来迪）。延祐七年四月，回回女生一男子。时值武宗长子周王和世琜（即位后为元明宗）流亡西北，过甘州山寺，见瀛国公幼子，“大喜，因求为子，并其母载以归”。明代以后，此说遂成确论。至清代，四库提要认为此说乃宋遗民伪造，明人“附会而盛传之”，“核以事实，渺无可据，实为荒诞之尤，非信史也”。”近时学者有谓瀛国公在移驻甘州之前，可能居于谦州吉利吉思地界（今叶尼塞河上游）。当时周王和世琜自陕西至岭北过金山（阿尔泰山），流亡于察合台后王封地，地理上与谦州接近，因此有相见赠子的可能。
