燧人氏又稱“燧人”，遠古人“茹毛飲血”，他鑽木取火，教人熟食，是人工取火的發明者。關於他的神話反映了中國原始時代從利用自然火，進化到人工取火的情況。《尚書大傳》雲：“遂人為遂皇，伏羲為戲皇，神農為農皇也。遂人以火紀，火，太陽也。陽尊，故托遂皇於天。”

燧明國簡介
遠古時代以燧木取火的氏族，又稱“燧明國”，不識四時晝夜。其人不死，厭世則升天。國有燧木，又叫火樹，屈盤萬頃，雲霧出於其間。有鳥若鶚，用咀去啄燧木，發出火光。有位聖人，從中受到啓發，於是就折下燧枝鑽木取火，人們就把這位聖人稱為燧人氏。《太平御覽》捲八六九引《王子年拾遺記》：“申彌國去都萬裏。有燧明國，不識四時晝夜。其人不死，厭世則升天。國有火樹，名燧木，屈盤萬頃，雲霧出於中間。折枝相鑽，則火出矣。後世聖人變腥鱢之味，遊日月之外，以食救萬物；乃至南垂。目此樹表，有鳥若{號鳥}，以口啄樹，粲然火出。聖人感焉，因取小枝以鑽火，號燧人氏。”同書捲七八引《禮古文嘉》雲：“燧人始鑽木取火……遂天之意，故為燧人。”又有“燧人氏夏取棗杏之火”的傳說(見《藝文類聚》捲八七引《九州論》)。今河南商丘流傳有“燧人擊石取火”的活神話。
燧人氏的首領
距今三萬年前，燧人氏首領與弇茲氏首領結合，建立互為婚姻的血緣聯盟，始稱燧人弇茲合雄氏。
弇茲氏的織女是中國歷史上最早的一位女首領，後世人追尊她為女帝，又稱玄女、玄帝、王素、素女、須女、帝弇茲等。她在距今三萬年前就發明了用樹皮搓繩的技術。她發明的繩有三種：單股的繩稱作“玄”，兩股合成的稱作“茲”，三股合成的稱作“索”（又作素）。
距今三萬年前，燧人弇茲氏在昆侖山（今甘肅祁連山）立挺木牙交，為地之中；上指天芎中宮天極星，為天之中。天極星即天北極，故又稱北極星。
北極星的首創者是燧人弇茲氏，故又稱紫宮、紫微垣。紫是玄的代稱，紫宮即玄宮，宮中女主為陰德星，是為弇茲聖母九天玄女。
約在距今一萬五千年至一萬三千年時，北極星因弇茲氏織女而命名為織女星。
燧人弇茲氏的分支
燧人弇茲氏有三大分支：一為大鵹（li），二為少鵹，三為青鳥。弇茲合雄氏以玄鳥為圖騰，其三大族係合稱“三柯氏”，也稱三青鳥氏。他們以燧人弇茲為始祖，尊稱他為“伊薩姆”，或“伊薩姆那”，各分支的首領則稱“耶勞”。
玄女部大鵹柯烏耶勞居住在合黎山南弱水（今甘肅張掖市北），其族屬又稱魁隗氏，分支甚廣。其中一支沿弱水嚮北遷徙，以居延海（今殘留嘎順諾爾湖）、焉支山（又名燕然山，即今竜首山及阿爾泰山脈的杭愛山）為基地嚮外延伸，散布於貝加爾湖支流的色楞格河、鄂爾渾河、額爾古納河（黑竜江上源）。一支沿阿爾泰山北麓西遷至東歐。一支由弱水西遷至阿爾泰山南麓烏倫古湖，沿伊犁河、阿拉套山進入準噶爾盆地和塔裏木盆地。
須女部少鵹柯諾耶勞居住在合黎山南弱水流域的方雷澤（今甘肅張掖市臨澤縣，其水今已枯），分衍出方雷支的盤古支，居於古浪（今甘肅武威市古浪縣）。其分支東遷至西海之東賀蘭山，北躍陰山入燕然山、貝加爾湖，與柯約耶勞支會合；另一支由陰山嚮東進入灤河流域及東北平原；一支由六盤水進入北洛水，與柯約耶勞的環江部為鄰。
柯約耶勞後世為張姓，在挪得建有張國（今甘肅張掖市），另有一支，後來被賜封為楊姓，於環江上遊建元城（又作玄城）。柯諾耶勞的後世沿桑幹河及支流黃水河發展，遷居於渾河、壺流河，建都於代王城（今河北張傢口市蔚縣），再遷涿鹿山，建“洛烏”城（又稱下洛，今河北張傢口市涿鹿縣）。
燧人弇茲本部柯約耶勞一支沿太行山往東進入今河北省境內，弇茲氏建都於靈壽（今河北石傢莊市靈壽縣），燧人氏建都於蒲陰（又稱完縣，今河北保定市順平縣）。其後又北遷於大王店，建都於遂城（今河北保定市徐水縣），定天地之中靈臺（今名戊己臺）。
燧人弇茲氏晚期分佈
燧人弇茲氏自立姓氏為“風”，這是中國人最早之姓。
風姓共分為十部：一為天芎部，二為天齊部，三為天乙部，四為合雄部，五為天陽部，六為天陰部，七為候鳥部，八為候蟲部，九為雷雨部，十為天皇部。
燧人氏晚期的分支幾乎遍布中華大地，其中重要的族係有弇茲氏、婼氏、華氏、胥氏、華胥氏、赫胥氏、仇夷氏、雷澤氏、盤瓠氏等。他們主要分佈在今甘肅省境內，西起敦煌（古瓜州）、三危山、疏勒河、弇茲山；東達慶陽、華池、河水，直至陝西境內的北洛河；南至湟中拉脊山、日月山、成縣、禮縣、康縣、鳳縣，直至秦嶺以南的華陽。其活動中心（觀星象祭天中心）主要有三處：一為合黎竜首山（古昆侖山），二為湟中拉脊山，三為六盤山。燧人氏的直係允姓、風姓、婼姓，分佈在其周圍。
弇茲氏的十項發明
燧人弇茲氏是中華民族的創立者，他為後世子孫留下了十項重大發明，這十項發明是：
一距今約五萬年時發明了“鑽木取火”，繼而又發明“燧石取火”。
二距今約四萬年時始作大山扶木紀歷，在昆侖山頂觀察天象以明天道，始為山川百物命名。
三距今約三萬年時弇茲氏織女發明搓繩技術，創立“結繩記事”，燧人氏以右樞天乙（天竜座a星）為北極星。
四距今約二萬年時燧人氏創立“氏族圖騰徽銘製”，始立姓氏為風。距今約二萬六千年時，燧人氏以太乙織女星（天琴座a星）為北極星。
五距今約一萬五千年時，燧人弇茲氏發明大山榑木太陽歷。
六距今約一萬四千八百年時，燧人弇茲氏發明《河圖》、《洛書》（柯約耶勞創《河圖》，柯諾耶勞創《洛書》）、星象歷，創造人類早期的符號文字。
七距今約一萬二千年時，燧人氏發明“陶文”，創造“十天幹”。

八距今約一萬一千年時，燧人氏創立八索準繩圭表紀歷。

相關考古研究
二十世紀八十年代，我國考古界在河北徐水南莊頭髮現了燧人氏晚期遺址，遺址中發掘出兩種陶片，一種為夾沙深灰陶，一種為夾沙紅褐陶。經科學考證，其生産年代距今約在一萬二千年前。
南莊頭遺址嚮世人公佈：早在一萬二千年前，我們的先祖已經能生産製作陶器，這是中華人種從原始時代嚮文明時代過渡的重要物證。

古籍對鑽木取火的記載
燧人氏是傳說中發明鑽木取火的人，這在先秦的古籍中已有記載。據《韓非子五蠹》記載：“上古之世，人民少而禽獸衆，人民不勝禽獸蟲蛇；……民食果蓏蚌蛤，腥鱢惡臭而傷害腹胃，民多疾病。有聖人作，鑽燧取火，以化腥鱢，而民說 (悅)之，使王天下，號之日燧人氏。”《屍子》雲：：“ 燧人上觀星辰，下察五木以為火。”《拾遺記》雲：“遂明國有大樹名遂，屈盤萬頃。後有聖人，遊至其國，有鳥啄樹，粲然火出，聖人感焉，因用小枝鑽火，號燧人氏。”《古史考》雲：“太古之初，人吮露精，食草木實，山居則食鳥獸，衣其羽皮，近水則食魚鱉蚌蛤，未有火化，腥鱢多，害腸胃。於使(是)有聖人出，以火德王，造作鑽燧出火，教人熟食，鑄金作刃，民人大悅，號日燧人。”《三墳》雲：“燧人氏教人炮食，鑽木取火，有傳教之臺，有結繩之政。”《漢書》亦有“教民熟食，養人利性，避臭去毒”的記載。清末著名學者尚秉和先生說：“火自無而有者也，其發明至為難能。燧皇感森林自焚，知木實藏火，不知幾經攻治，幾經試驗，始鑽木得之。其功又進於有巢，而即以是為帝號，可見當時之詫為神聖，而利賴之深矣。”又說： “或謂火化而食始於庖羲，故以為號，豈知燧人既發明出火，其智慧豈尚不知炮食?況炮者裹肉而燒之，燎其毛使熟耳。在熟食中，燧人氏不僅發明了人工取火，而且最早教人熟食。尚先生在《歷代社會風俗事物考》中還說：“由今追想未有火之先，凡肉皆生食，其有害於人而夭折者，不知凡幾，且不知味。及得熟食，肉之腥鱢者忽馨香矣，草木實之淡泊寡味者忽甘腴脆關矣，水之冰者可燠飲，居之寒者可取溫矣。至黑夜燔柴以禦虎豹，猶後也。當夫登臺傳教，廣播為用之時，萬民之感為至粗之法。燧人去伏羲近，伏羲益發達美備耳。其創於燧人，無疑也。”尚秉和先生認為，戴慶幸為何如，真驚天動地之偉業矣。既有火則可冶金作刃及他器用。未有火之先，凡器皆以石為之，今所謂石器時代也。”
故事還原
在遠古蠻荒時期，人們不知道有火，也不知道用火。到了黑夜，四處一片漆黑，野獸的吼叫聲此起彼伏，人們蜷縮在一起，又冷又怕。由於沒有火，人們衹能吃生的食物，經常生病，壽命也很短。
天上有個大神叫伏羲，他看到人間生活得這樣艱難，心裏很難過，他想讓人們知道火的用處。於是伏羲大展神通，在山林中降下一場雷雨。隨着“咔”的一聲，雷電劈在樹木上，樹木燃燒起來，很快就變成了熊熊大火。人們被雷電和大火嚇着了，到處奔逃。不久，雷雨停了，夜幕降臨，雨後的大地更加濕冷。逃散的人們又聚到了一起，他們驚恐地看着燃燒的樹木。這時候有個年輕人發現，原來經常在周圍出現的野獸的嚎叫聲沒有了，他想：“難道野獸怕這個發亮的東西嗎？”於是，他勇敢地走到火邊，他發現身上好暖和呀。他興奮地招呼大傢：“快來呀，這火一點不可怕，它給我們帶來了光明和溫暖！”這時候，人們又發現不遠處燒死的野獸，發出了陣陣香味。人們聚到火邊，分吃燒過的野獸肉，覺得自己從沒有吃過這樣的美味。人們感到了火的可貴，他們揀來樹枝，點燃火，保留起來。每天都有人輪流守着火種，不讓它熄滅。可是有一天，值守的人睡着了，火燃盡了樹枝，熄滅了。人們又重新陷入了黑暗和寒冷之中，痛苦極了。
大神伏羲在天上看到了這一切，他來到最先發現火的用處的那個年輕人的夢裏，告訴他：“在遙遠的西方有個遂明國，那裏有火種，你可以去那裏把火種取回來。”年輕人醒了，想起夢裏大神說的話，决心到遂明國去尋找火種。
年輕人翻過高山，涉過大河，穿過森林，歷盡艱辛，終於來到了遂明國。可是這裏沒有陽光，不分晝夜，四處一片黑暗，根本沒有火。年輕人非常失望，就坐在一棵叫“遂木”的大樹下休息。突然，年輕人眼前有亮光一閃，又一閃，把周圍照得很明亮。年輕人立刻站起來，四處尋找光源。這時候他發現就在遂木樹上，有幾衹大鳥正在用短而硬的喙啄樹上的蟲子。衹要它們一啄，樹上就閃出明亮的火花。年輕人看到這種情景，腦子裏靈光一閃。他立刻折了一些遂木的樹枝，用小樹枝去鑽大樹枝，樹枝上果然閃出火光，可是卻着不起火來。年輕人不灰心，他找來各種樹枝，耐心地用不同的樹枝進行摩擦。終於，樹枝上冒煙了，然後出火了。年輕人高興地流下了眼淚。
年輕人回到了家乡，為人們帶來了永遠不會熄滅的火種－－鑽木取火的辦法，從此人們再也不用生活在寒冷和恐懼中了。人們被這個年輕人的勇氣和智慧折服，推舉他做首領，並稱他為“燧人”，也就是取火者的意思。
商丘市城西南2公裏的燧皇陵，相傳就是燧人氏的葬地，其塚高約7米，周圍鬆柏環繞。塚前有中國歷史博物館館長俞偉超先生的手書碑刻及後世刻的石像生，是人們為紀念燧人氏而立的。
今人評價
著名史學家郭沫若先生主編的《中國史稿》中說：“人工取火的發明，對於遠古人類的生活無疑起了極為重大的作用，引起後人極大的重視……這樣的傳說固然夾雜着後代的生活內容，蒙上了神秘的外衣，但它依然反映着樸素的遠古人類生活的史實背景。”趙樸初先生曾作詩道：“燧人取火非常業，世界從此日日新。”恩格斯說：“就世界的解放作用而言，摩擦生火還是超過了蒸汽機。因為摩擦生火第一次使得人支配了一種自然力，從而最後與動物界分開。”
人工取火的意義
人工取火的發明結束了人類茹毛飲血的時代，開創了人類文明的新紀元。所以，燧人氏一直受到人們的敬重和崇拜，並尊他為三皇之首，奉為“火祖”。
火的發明使人類有了可以創造的溫暖，對遠古人類的聚集提供了武器和條件，是人類群居思想的産生提供了根源。火的發明創造了中國傢文化的妊振期。
最早的原始人，還不知道利用火，東西都是生吃的，生吃植物果實還不算，就是打來的野獸，也是生吞活剝，連毛帶血的吃了。後來，纔發明了用火（在周口店的北京人遺址上，已發現用火的痕跡，說明那時候已經知道利用火）。
火的現象，自然界早就有了，火山爆發，有火；打雷閃電的時候，樹林裏也會起火。可是原始人開始看到火，不會利用，反而怕得要命。後來偶爾撿到被火燒死的野獸，拿來一嘗，味道挺香。經過多少次的試驗，人們漸漸學會用火燒東西吃，並且想法子把火種保存下來，使它常年不滅。
又過了相當長的時期，人們把堅硬而尖銳的木頭，在另一塊硬木頭上使勁地鑽，鑽出火星來；也有的把燧石（燧音suì）敲敲打打，敲出火來。這就懂得了工人能夠取火（從考古材料發現，山頂洞人已經懂得人工取火）。是誰發明的呢？當然是勞動人民，但是傳說中又說成是一個人，叫做“燧人氏”。
人工取火是一個了不起的發明。從那時候起，人們就隨時可以吃到燒熟的東西，而且食物的品種也增加了。據說，燧人氏還教人捕魚。原來像魚、鱉、蚌、蛤一類東西，生的有腥鱢味不能吃，有了取火辦法，就可以燒熟來吃了。
【燧人氏故事新解】
“燧人氏”兩見於古代傳說，其事跡是“教民鑽木取火”，這一技術發明，使得人們不再依賴天然火取得火種。“燧”字表示取火工具，現代一般指燧石，互相摩擦可以擊出火星。在先秦時代主要是指的是鑽燧取火，也就是用一個木棒快速研鑽另一木塊生熱最終而成火的行動。其實遂、隧、燧、邃四個字同音，都與“貫通黑暗”意義相關：遂表示完成，其本義相當從黑暗的隧道中走出來，有豁然開朗的意味，如遂心、遂願等；隧就是開掘隧洞，隧道中當然黑暗；燧是在木塊上鑽洞，目的在於取火；邃指空間或時間的深遠，如同在隧洞中一樣，難以辨明前景。從這些同音字中可以看出，極有可能遠在沒有文字的時代就已經有了燧人氏的傳說故事。 “燧人氏”這個名字本身恰恰自述了鑽木取火這一偉大發明。恩格斯說：“就世界的解放作用而言，摩擦生火還是超過了蒸汽機。因為摩擦生火第一次使得人支配了一種自然力，從而最後與動物界分開。”郭沫若先生在《中國史稿》中說：“人工取火的發明，對於遠古人類的生活無疑起了極為重大的作用，引起後人極大的重視……這樣的傳說固然夾雜着後代的生活內容，蒙上了神秘的外衣，但它依然反映着樸素的遠古人類生活的史實背景。”
在北京周口店一個重要的發現是北京人使用火的證據。這些證據包括灰燼、炭塊和燒過的骨頭和石頭。由於有的灰燼成堆出現，說明北京人已經懂得如何能夠使火不嚮四周蔓延，也就是說，北京人已經會管理控製火了。北京人用火的證據的發現是當時所知道的人類最早的用火記錄。另一方面，北京人所擁有的管理控製火的能力說明，北京人也不是最早用火的人類群體，人類最初開始用火的時間還應該提前。後來，其他國傢的人類學家也在非洲等地更為古老的直立人遺址中發現了許多用火的遺跡。比如，在安哥拉發現的原始人舊石器文化中就有用火的跡象。從各種跡象來看，人類用火的歷史應該在一百萬年以上。
其實人類最初用火首先是追求光明的心理需求。與追求光明相對應，人類對黑暗有着與生俱來的深深的恐怖。對黑暗的恐怖伴隨着整個人類的歷史，以至後來一切威脅人類的、腐朽的東西，都用黑暗來形容。人有五種知覺，視、聽、嗅、味、觸，其中視覺是最重要的感知外部世界的信息通道，其獲取的信息占到人體所獲得的全部信息量的百分之八十，其次是聽覺，獲取着百分之十的信息量。失去感覺是一件很可怕的事情。一九五四年，加拿大心理學家赫布和剋斯頓進行了首次“感覺剝奪”實驗，讓受試者躺在隔音室內的床上，蒙上眼睛，堵住耳朵，戴上手套，基本上剝奪了受試者的視覺、聽覺和觸覺。結果表明，被剝奪了感覺之後，人會産生難以忍受的痛苦，大多數受試者衹能堅持三天，幾乎沒有人能忍受一周以上。被剝奪了感覺之後，人的心理會産生異常，註意力不能集中，不能進行連續的思考，有人會産生幻覺，有的人則變得神經質，甚至産生恐怖。即使實驗結束之後，他們集中註意力的能力和思維能力仍受到嚴重影響，需要經過一定時間才能恢復。由此可見，被剝奪感覺會給人的心理帶來嚴重破壞。由於視覺獲取着我們人類百分之八十的信息量，所以，黑暗中我們都會不由自主地感到不安。人們在野外過夜時，總要設法點燃一堆篝火，而且篝火晚會是人們最喜愛的娛樂形式，其道理就在這裏。由此不難設想，早在遠古時期，人類就已經利用天然火取得火種，以滿足追求光明的心理需求。隨着用火的技能的提高，人們又發現了火的更多用途，從而更加離不開火。在漢語裏，“火 ”“活”讀音相同。按照音同義通的原則，“火”就是“活”，“活”就是“火”，在沒有文字之前，兩者沒有區別，或區別很小。既然“火”“活”不分，說明我們老祖宗對“燃燒着的火”和“生存活命”這兩個看似風馬牛不相及的事情有着獨特的的認識。“火”“活”不分的本質意義在於：火是活命的基礎，有火才能活命，要活命就離不開火。
韓非子解釋人類用火的原因稱：“在沒有火之前，民衆生吃東西，生的果蓏蚌蛤腥鱢惡臭會傷害腹胃，因而容易生病，有聖人認識到這一點，發明鑽燧取火的方法以去除。”其實這是韓非子以其所處時代的知識解釋遠古，並不十分妥當。首先，沒有火的時候，人的胃口是能夠適當生食的，比例其他動物都是生食的，並不容易生病。其次，韓非子時代沒有考古學，不瞭解人類用火的歷史由來已久。第三，韓非子沒能意識到人們對黑暗和光明的心理感受。這是時代的局限所在，現代人不能因此苛求韓非子老先生。其實，在遠古先民在追求光明而用火的過程中發現火的另一大功用確實是熟食，但不是去除腥鱢或改善食物滋味，而是用火來幫助進食。人類沒有強壯的犬齒，無法像虎豹狼那樣撕食新鮮肉食，雖然早就發明了石器，但那時的石器非常簡陋，切割新鮮肉食的能力很差，而燒烤熟爛的肉食就很容易撕吃了。同樣，用火燒烤過的堅果之類也容易剝食。所以，在遠古時期，“熟食好吃”的含義不是味道好，而是容易吃進肚子裏。有了火的幫助，人類可以取食的東西會更多，大大拓展食物來源，生存能力有了飛躍性進步。
在甘肅大地灣遺址和陝西半坡遺址，每個半地穴式原始住房都有一個火塘，而且必然設在進門處，這一位置設置透露出一個非常重要的信息。如果單為照明和取暖，火塘的位置應該設在房子的中間，效果纔最好。設在進門處，說明火塘還有另一個重要作用，那就是防止野獸半夜偷襲。現在人們往往先驗地認為，人類發明了住房之後，隨之就發明了門，用封堵房子進口。其實門也是有一定復雜性的東西，門的發明很難說是一個聖人靈機一動就發明出來。可以合理設想，中華先民發明了半地穴式住之初並沒有門，而是用火來作門防止野獸進入房內的，火塘就是最早的門。所以，火塘的原始位置說明，那時候的中華先民已經認識到野獸有怕火的天性，可以用火來驅逐野獸。先民們就利用這一原理，或用火驅趕圍捕野獸，或者用火保衛自己，從而大大提高了生存能力。由此還說明，成熟的用火技術是人們在地面建房屋定居的技術保障，人類的生存空間因此大為拓展。
