燧人氏又称“燧人”，远古人“茹毛饮血”，他钻木取火，教人熟食，是人工取火的发明者。关于他的神话反映了中国原始时代从利用自然火，进化到人工取火的情况。《尚书大传》云：“遂人为遂皇，伏羲为戏皇，神农为农皇也。遂人以火纪，火，太阳也。阳尊，故托遂皇于天。”

燧明国简介
远古时代以燧木取火的氏族，又称“燧明国”，不识四时昼夜。其人不死，厌世则升天。国有燧木，又叫火树，屈盘万顷，云雾出于其间。有鸟若鹗，用咀去啄燧木，发出火光。有位圣人，从中受到启发，于是就折下燧枝钻木取火，人们就把这位圣人称为燧人氏。《太平御览》卷八六九引《王子年拾遗记》：“申弥国去都万里。有燧明国，不识四时昼夜。其人不死，厌世则升天。国有火树，名燧木，屈盘万顷，云雾出于中间。折枝相钻，则火出矣。后世圣人变腥臊之味，游日月之外，以食救万物；乃至南垂。目此树表，有鸟若{号鸟}，以口啄树，粲然火出。圣人感焉，因取小枝以钻火，号燧人氏。”同书卷七八引《礼古文嘉》云：“燧人始钻木取火……遂天之意，故为燧人。”又有“燧人氏夏取枣杏之火”的传说(见《艺文类聚》卷八七引《九州论》)。今河南商丘流传有“燧人击石取火”的活神话。
燧人氏的首领
距今三万年前，燧人氏首领与弇兹氏首领结合，建立互为婚姻的血缘联盟，始称燧人弇兹合雄氏。
弇兹氏的织女是中国历史上最早的一位女首领，后世人追尊她为女帝，又称玄女、玄帝、王素、素女、须女、帝弇兹等。她在距今三万年前就发明了用树皮搓绳的技术。她发明的绳有三种：单股的绳称作“玄”，两股合成的称作“兹”，三股合成的称作“索”（又作素）。
距今三万年前，燧人弇兹氏在昆仑山（今甘肃祁连山）立挺木牙交，为地之中；上指天芎中宫天极星，为天之中。天极星即天北极，故又称北极星。
北极星的首创者是燧人弇兹氏，故又称紫宫、紫微垣。紫是玄的代称，紫宫即玄宫，宫中女主为阴德星，是为弇兹圣母九天玄女。
约在距今一万五千年至一万三千年时，北极星因弇兹氏织女而命名为织女星。
燧人弇兹氏的分支
燧人弇兹氏有三大分支：一为大鵹（li），二为少鵹，三为青鸟。弇兹合雄氏以玄鸟为图腾，其三大族系合称“三柯氏”，也称三青鸟氏。他们以燧人弇兹为始祖，尊称他为“伊萨姆”，或“伊萨姆那”，各分支的首领则称“耶劳”。
玄女部大鵹柯乌耶劳居住在合黎山南弱水（今甘肃张掖市北），其族属又称魁隗氏，分支甚广。其中一支沿弱水向北迁徙，以居延海（今残留嘎顺诺尔湖）、焉支山（又名燕然山，即今龙首山及阿尔泰山脉的杭爱山）为基地向外延伸，散布于贝加尔湖支流的色楞格河、鄂尔浑河、额尔古纳河（黑龙江上源）。一支沿阿尔泰山北麓西迁至东欧。一支由弱水西迁至阿尔泰山南麓乌伦古湖，沿伊犁河、阿拉套山进入准噶尔盆地和塔里木盆地。
须女部少鵹柯诺耶劳居住在合黎山南弱水流域的方雷泽（今甘肃张掖市临泽县，其水今已枯），分衍出方雷支的盘古支，居于古浪（今甘肃武威市古浪县）。其分支东迁至西海之东贺兰山，北跃阴山入燕然山、贝加尔湖，与柯约耶劳支会合；另一支由阴山向东进入滦河流域及东北平原；一支由六盘水进入北洛水，与柯约耶劳的环江部为邻。
柯约耶劳后世为张姓，在挪得建有张国（今甘肃张掖市），另有一支，后来被赐封为杨姓，于环江上游建元城（又作玄城）。柯诺耶劳的后世沿桑干河及支流黄水河发展，迁居于浑河、壶流河，建都于代王城（今河北张家口市蔚县），再迁涿鹿山，建“洛乌”城（又称下洛，今河北张家口市涿鹿县）。
燧人弇兹本部柯约耶劳一支沿太行山往东进入今河北省境内，弇兹氏建都于灵寿（今河北石家庄市灵寿县），燧人氏建都于蒲阴（又称完县，今河北保定市顺平县）。其后又北迁于大王店，建都于遂城（今河北保定市徐水县），定天地之中灵台（今名戊己台）。
燧人弇兹氏晚期分布
燧人弇兹氏自立姓氏为“风”，这是中国人最早之姓。
风姓共分为十部：一为天芎部，二为天齐部，三为天乙部，四为合雄部，五为天阳部，六为天阴部，七为候鸟部，八为候虫部，九为雷雨部，十为天皇部。
燧人氏晚期的分支几乎遍布中华大地，其中重要的族系有弇兹氏、婼氏、华氏、胥氏、华胥氏、赫胥氏、仇夷氏、雷泽氏、盘瓠氏等。他们主要分布在今甘肃省境内，西起敦煌（古瓜州）、三危山、疏勒河、弇兹山；东达庆阳、华池、河水，直至陕西境内的北洛河；南至湟中拉脊山、日月山、成县、礼县、康县、凤县，直至秦岭以南的华阳。其活动中心（观星象祭天中心）主要有三处：一为合黎龙首山（古昆仑山），二为湟中拉脊山，三为六盘山。燧人氏的直系允姓、风姓、婼姓，分布在其周围。
弇兹氏的十项发明
燧人弇兹氏是中华民族的创立者，他为后世子孙留下了十项重大发明，这十项发明是：
一距今约五万年时发明了“钻木取火”，继而又发明“燧石取火”。
二距今约四万年时始作大山扶木纪历，在昆仑山顶观察天象以明天道，始为山川百物命名。
三距今约三万年时弇兹氏织女发明搓绳技术，创立“结绳记事”，燧人氏以右枢天乙（天龙座a星）为北极星。
四距今约二万年时燧人氏创立“氏族图腾徽铭制”，始立姓氏为风。距今约二万六千年时，燧人氏以太乙织女星（天琴座a星）为北极星。
五距今约一万五千年时，燧人弇兹氏发明大山榑木太阳历。
六距今约一万四千八百年时，燧人弇兹氏发明《河图》、《洛书》（柯约耶劳创《河图》，柯诺耶劳创《洛书》）、星象历，创造人类早期的符号文字。
七距今约一万二千年时，燧人氏发明“陶文”，创造“十天干”。

八距今约一万一千年时，燧人氏创立八索准绳圭表纪历。

相关考古研究
二十世纪八十年代，我国考古界在河北徐水南庄头发现了燧人氏晚期遗址，遗址中发掘出两种陶片，一种为夹沙深灰陶，一种为夹沙红褐陶。经科学考证，其生产年代距今约在一万二千年前。
南庄头遗址向世人公布：早在一万二千年前，我们的先祖已经能生产制作陶器，这是中华人种从原始时代向文明时代过渡的重要物证。
【钻木取火】
古籍对钻木取火的记载
燧人氏是传说中发明钻木取火的人，这在先秦的古籍中已有记载。据《韩非子五蠹》记载：“上古之世，人民少而禽兽众，人民不胜禽兽虫蛇；……民食果蓏蚌蛤，腥臊恶臭而伤害腹胃，民多疾病。有圣人作，钻燧取火，以化腥臊，而民说 (悦)之，使王天下，号之日燧人氏。”《尸子》云：：“ 燧人上观星辰，下察五木以为火。”《拾遗记》云：“遂明国有大树名遂，屈盘万顷。后有圣人，游至其国，有鸟啄树，粲然火出，圣人感焉，因用小枝钻火，号燧人氏。”《古史考》云：“太古之初，人吮露精，食草木实，山居则食鸟兽，衣其羽皮，近水则食鱼鳖蚌蛤，未有火化，腥臊多，害肠胃。于使(是)有圣人出，以火德王，造作钻燧出火，教人熟食，铸金作刃，民人大悦，号日燧人。”《三坟》云：“燧人氏教人炮食，钻木取火，有传教之台，有结绳之政。”《汉书》亦有“教民熟食，养人利性，避臭去毒”的记载。清末著名学者尚秉和先生说：“火自无而有者也，其发明至为难能。燧皇感森林自焚，知木实藏火，不知几经攻治，几经试验，始钻木得之。其功又进于有巢，而即以是为帝号，可见当时之诧为神圣，而利赖之深矣。”又说： “或谓火化而食始于庖羲，故以为号，岂知燧人既发明出火，其智慧岂尚不知炮食?况炮者裹肉而烧之，燎其毛使熟耳。在熟食中，燧人氏不仅发明了人工取火，而且最早教人熟食。尚先生在《历代社会风俗事物考》中还说：“由今追想未有火之先，凡肉皆生食，其有害于人而夭折者，不知凡几，且不知味。及得熟食，肉之腥臊者忽馨香矣，草木实之淡泊寡味者忽甘腴脆关矣，水之冰者可燠饮，居之寒者可取温矣。至黑夜燔柴以御虎豹，犹后也。当夫登台传教，广播为用之时，万民之感为至粗之法。燧人去伏羲近，伏羲益发达美备耳。其创于燧人，无疑也。”尚秉和先生认为，戴庆幸为何如，真惊天动地之伟业矣。既有火则可冶金作刃及他器用。未有火之先，凡器皆以石为之，今所谓石器时代也。”
故事还原
在远古蛮荒时期，人们不知道有火，也不知道用火。到了黑夜，四处一片漆黑，野兽的吼叫声此起彼伏，人们蜷缩在一起，又冷又怕。由于没有火，人们只能吃生的食物，经常生病，寿命也很短。
天上有个大神叫伏羲，他看到人间生活得这样艰难，心里很难过，他想让人们知道火的用处。于是伏羲大展神通，在山林中降下一场雷雨。随着“咔”的一声，雷电劈在树木上，树木燃烧起来，很快就变成了熊熊大火。人们被雷电和大火吓着了，到处奔逃。不久，雷雨停了，夜幕降临，雨后的大地更加湿冷。逃散的人们又聚到了一起，他们惊恐地看着燃烧的树木。这时候有个年轻人发现，原来经常在周围出现的野兽的嚎叫声没有了，他想：“难道野兽怕这个发亮的东西吗？”于是，他勇敢地走到火边，他发现身上好暖和呀。他兴奋地招呼大家：“快来呀，这火一点不可怕，它给我们带来了光明和温暖！”这时候，人们又发现不远处烧死的野兽，发出了阵阵香味。人们聚到火边，分吃烧过的野兽肉，觉得自己从没有吃过这样的美味。人们感到了火的可贵，他们拣来树枝，点燃火，保留起来。每天都有人轮流守着火种，不让它熄灭。可是有一天，值守的人睡着了，火燃尽了树枝，熄灭了。人们又重新陷入了黑暗和寒冷之中，痛苦极了。
大神伏羲在天上看到了这一切，他来到最先发现火的用处的那个年轻人的梦里，告诉他：“在遥远的西方有个遂明国，那里有火种，你可以去那里把火种取回来。”年轻人醒了，想起梦里大神说的话，决心到遂明国去寻找火种。
年轻人翻过高山，涉过大河，穿过森林，历尽艰辛，终于来到了遂明国。可是这里没有阳光，不分昼夜，四处一片黑暗，根本没有火。年轻人非常失望，就坐在一棵叫“遂木”的大树下休息。突然，年轻人眼前有亮光一闪，又一闪，把周围照得很明亮。年轻人立刻站起来，四处寻找光源。这时候他发现就在遂木树上，有几只大鸟正在用短而硬的喙啄树上的虫子。只要它们一啄，树上就闪出明亮的火花。年轻人看到这种情景，脑子里灵光一闪。他立刻折了一些遂木的树枝，用小树枝去钻大树枝，树枝上果然闪出火光，可是却着不起火来。年轻人不灰心，他找来各种树枝，耐心地用不同的树枝进行摩擦。终于，树枝上冒烟了，然后出火了。年轻人高兴地流下了眼泪。
年轻人回到了家乡，为人们带来了永远不会熄灭的火种－－钻木取火的办法，从此人们再也不用生活在寒冷和恐惧中了。人们被这个年轻人的勇气和智慧折服，推举他做首领，并称他为“燧人”，也就是取火者的意思。
商丘市城西南2公里的燧皇陵，相传就是燧人氏的葬地，其冢高约7米，周围松柏环绕。冢前有中国历史博物馆馆长俞伟超先生的手书碑刻及后世刻的石像生，是人们为纪念燧人氏而立的。
今人评价
著名史学家郭沫若先生主编的《中国史稿》中说：“人工取火的发明，对于远古人类的生活无疑起了极为重大的作用，引起后人极大的重视……这样的传说固然夹杂着后代的生活内容，蒙上了神秘的外衣，但它依然反映着朴素的远古人类生活的史实背景。”赵朴初先生曾作诗道：“燧人取火非常业，世界从此日日新。”恩格斯说：“就世界的解放作用而言，摩擦生火还是超过了蒸汽机。因为摩擦生火第一次使得人支配了一种自然力，从而最后与动物界分开。”
人工取火的意义
人工取火的发明结束了人类茹毛饮血的时代，开创了人类文明的新纪元。所以，燧人氏一直受到人们的敬重和崇拜，并尊他为三皇之首，奉为“火祖”。
火的发明使人类有了可以创造的温暖，对远古人类的聚集提供了武器和条件，是人类群居思想的产生提供了根源。火的发明创造了中国家文化的妊振期。
最早的原始人，还不知道利用火，东西都是生吃的，生吃植物果实还不算，就是打来的野兽，也是生吞活剥，连毛带血的吃了。后来，才发明了用火（在周口店的北京人遗址上，已发现用火的痕迹，说明那时候已经知道利用火）。
火的现象，自然界早就有了，火山爆发，有火；打雷闪电的时候，树林里也会起火。可是原始人开始看到火，不会利用，反而怕得要命。后来偶尔捡到被火烧死的野兽，拿来一尝，味道挺香。经过多少次的试验，人们渐渐学会用火烧东西吃，并且想法子把火种保存下来，使它常年不灭。
又过了相当长的时期，人们把坚硬而尖锐的木头，在另一块硬木头上使劲地钻，钻出火星来；也有的把燧石（燧音suì）敲敲打打，敲出火来。这就懂得了工人能够取火（从考古材料发现，山顶洞人已经懂得人工取火）。是谁发明的呢？当然是劳动人民，但是传说中又说成是一个人，叫做“燧人氏”。
人工取火是一个了不起的发明。从那时候起，人们就随时可以吃到烧熟的东西，而且食物的品种也增加了。据说，燧人氏还教人捕鱼。原来像鱼、鳖、蚌、蛤一类东西，生的有腥臊味不能吃，有了取火办法，就可以烧熟来吃了。
【燧人氏故事新解】
“燧人氏”两见于古代传说，其事迹是“教民钻木取火”，这一技术发明，使得人们不再依赖天然火取得火种。“燧”字表示取火工具，现代一般指燧石，互相摩擦可以击出火星。在先秦时代主要是指的是钻燧取火，也就是用一个木棒快速研钻另一木块生热最终而成火的行动。其实遂、隧、燧、邃四个字同音，都与“贯通黑暗”意义相关：遂表示完成，其本义相当从黑暗的隧道中走出来，有豁然开朗的意味，如遂心、遂愿等；隧就是开掘隧洞，隧道中当然黑暗；燧是在木块上钻洞，目的在于取火；邃指空间或时间的深远，如同在隧洞中一样，难以辨明前景。从这些同音字中可以看出，极有可能远在没有文字的时代就已经有了燧人氏的传说故事。 “燧人氏”这个名字本身恰恰自述了钻木取火这一伟大发明。恩格斯说：“就世界的解放作用而言，摩擦生火还是超过了蒸汽机。因为摩擦生火第一次使得人支配了一种自然力，从而最后与动物界分开。”郭沫若先生在《中国史稿》中说：“人工取火的发明，对于远古人类的生活无疑起了极为重大的作用，引起后人极大的重视……这样的传说固然夹杂着后代的生活内容，蒙上了神秘的外衣，但它依然反映着朴素的远古人类生活的史实背景。”
在北京周口店一个重要的发现是北京人使用火的证据。这些证据包括灰烬、炭块和烧过的骨头和石头。由于有的灰烬成堆出现，说明北京人已经懂得如何能够使火不向四周蔓延，也就是说，北京人已经会管理控制火了。北京人用火的证据的发现是当时所知道的人类最早的用火记录。另一方面，北京人所拥有的管理控制火的能力说明，北京人也不是最早用火的人类群体，人类最初开始用火的时间还应该提前。后来，其他国家的人类学家也在非洲等地更为古老的直立人遗址中发现了许多用火的遗迹。比如，在安哥拉发现的原始人旧石器文化中就有用火的迹象。从各种迹象来看，人类用火的历史应该在一百万年以上。
其实人类最初用火首先是追求光明的心理需求。与追求光明相对应，人类对黑暗有着与生俱来的深深的恐怖。对黑暗的恐怖伴随着整个人类的历史，以至后来一切威胁人类的、腐朽的东西，都用黑暗来形容。人有五种知觉，视、听、嗅、味、触，其中视觉是最重要的感知外部世界的信息通道，其获取的信息占到人体所获得的全部信息量的百分之八十，其次是听觉，获取着百分之十的信息量。失去感觉是一件很可怕的事情。一九五四年，加拿大心理学家赫布和克斯顿进行了首次“感觉剥夺”实验，让受试者躺在隔音室内的床上，蒙上眼睛，堵住耳朵，戴上手套，基本上剥夺了受试者的视觉、听觉和触觉。结果表明，被剥夺了感觉之后，人会产生难以忍受的痛苦，大多数受试者只能坚持三天，几乎没有人能忍受一周以上。被剥夺了感觉之后，人的心理会产生异常，注意力不能集中，不能进行连续的思考，有人会产生幻觉，有的人则变得神经质，甚至产生恐怖。即使实验结束之后，他们集中注意力的能力和思维能力仍受到严重影响，需要经过一定时间才能恢复。由此可见，被剥夺感觉会给人的心理带来严重破坏。由于视觉获取着我们人类百分之八十的信息量，所以，黑暗中我们都会不由自主地感到不安。人们在野外过夜时，总要设法点燃一堆篝火，而且篝火晚会是人们最喜爱的娱乐形式，其道理就在这里。由此不难设想，早在远古时期，人类就已经利用天然火取得火种，以满足追求光明的心理需求。随着用火的技能的提高，人们又发现了火的更多用途，从而更加离不开火。在汉语里，“火 ”“活”读音相同。按照音同义通的原则，“火”就是“活”，“活”就是“火”，在没有文字之前，两者没有区别，或区别很小。既然“火”“活”不分，说明我们老祖宗对“燃烧着的火”和“生存活命”这两个看似风马牛不相及的事情有着独特的的认识。“火”“活”不分的本质意义在于：火是活命的基础，有火才能活命，要活命就离不开火。
韩非子解释人类用火的原因称：“在没有火之前，民众生吃东西，生的果蓏蚌蛤腥臊恶臭会伤害腹胃，因而容易生病，有圣人认识到这一点，发明钻燧取火的方法以去除。”其实这是韩非子以其所处时代的知识解释远古，并不十分妥当。首先，没有火的时候，人的胃口是能够适当生食的，比例其他动物都是生食的，并不容易生病。其次，韩非子时代没有考古学，不了解人类用火的历史由来已久。第三，韩非子没能意识到人们对黑暗和光明的心理感受。这是时代的局限所在，现代人不能因此苛求韩非子老先生。其实，在远古先民在追求光明而用火的过程中发现火的另一大功用确实是熟食，但不是去除腥臊或改善食物滋味，而是用火来帮助进食。人类没有强壮的犬齿，无法像虎豹狼那样撕食新鲜肉食，虽然早就发明了石器，但那时的石器非常简陋，切割新鲜肉食的能力很差，而烧烤熟烂的肉食就很容易撕吃了。同样，用火烧烤过的坚果之类也容易剥食。所以，在远古时期，“熟食好吃”的含义不是味道好，而是容易吃进肚子里。有了火的帮助，人类可以取食的东西会更多，大大拓展食物来源，生存能力有了飞跃性进步。
在甘肃大地湾遗址和陕西半坡遗址，每个半地穴式原始住房都有一个火塘，而且必然设在进门处，这一位置设置透露出一个非常重要的信息。如果单为照明和取暖，火塘的位置应该设在房子的中间，效果才最好。设在进门处，说明火塘还有另一个重要作用，那就是防止野兽半夜偷袭。现在人们往往先验地认为，人类发明了住房之后，随之就发明了门，用封堵房子进口。其实门也是有一定复杂性的东西，门的发明很难说是一个圣人灵机一动就发明出来。可以合理设想，中华先民发明了半地穴式住之初并没有门，而是用火来作门防止野兽进入房内的，火塘就是最早的门。所以，火塘的原始位置说明，那时候的中华先民已经认识到野兽有怕火的天性，可以用火来驱逐野兽。先民们就利用这一原理，或用火驱赶围捕野兽，或者用火保卫自己，从而大大提高了生存能力。由此还说明，成熟的用火技术是人们在地面建房屋定居的技术保障，人类的生存空间因此大为拓展。
由上述分析可以看出，火在远古先民中与吃、住两大生存需要密切相关，仅靠从天然火中取得火种已经满足不了人们对火的需求，人工取火势在必行。我们知道，由于木材的着火点较高，钻木虽然生热，但很难达到引燃木材的热度，所以，钻木取火时要在钻点处放上易燃的引火物，先点燃引火物，再用来别的东西。刘成刚先生曾经分析我国古代另外两种取火方法“以珠取火”和“以冰取火”，认为是都是利用凸透镜能使太阳的光线折射会聚，把艾绒之类的易燃物放在光热会聚的交点上来取火的。很可能钻木取火时的引火物也是艾绒之类的易燃物。发现钻木摩擦可以生热这种现象可以出于偶然，尝试一下钻木生热也可以出于偶然，但是要找到一种合适的引火物则就不那么容易了。大发明家爱迪生发明白炽灯，仅试验用做灯丝的材料就多达上千种，由此可以想像古人发明钻木取火的方法同样是一个艰苦的探索过程，几乎可以肯定地说，是在数代人探索和知识积累基础上，在某一天由一个痴迷者机缘巧合，点燃了第一株人工火苗。只是由于年代久远，那位点燃第一株人工火苗的人名被淹没在历史尘埃之中，或许那时候的人们根本就没有名字。当后来的历史中突然有一天人们关注火的时候，为了说明问题，而称之为“燧人氏”，其实含义无非是“发明钻燧取火的老祖宗”的意思。正因为如此，古代学者们还把人工取火的发明权记在其他人名之下，《管子•轻重篇》中就说“炎帝作钻燧生火”。

结绳记事简介
据古史记载，燧人氏不仅发明了“钻木取火”，还发明了“结绳记事”，为禽兽命名，立传教之台，兴交易之道。那时候人类还没有文字，生活中有许多事全凭大脑记忆，但时间久了，有些事情往往会被遗忘。
燧人氏用柔软而有韧性的树皮搓成细绳，然后将数十条细绳排列整齐悬挂在一处，在上边打结记事。大事打大结，小事打小结，先发生的事打在里边，后发生的事打在外边。为了能够记录更多的事情，燧人氏又利用植物的天然色彩，把细绳染成各种颜色，每种颜色分别代表一类事物，使所记之事更加清楚。
