宋光宗宋朝所有皇帝中比较昏庸的一位。他受父宋孝宗禅位而登基做皇帝以后，已经43岁。宋光宗体弱多病，又没有安邦治国之才，而且光宗听取奸臣谗言，罢免辛弃疾等主战派大臣，又由当时著名的妒妇、心狠手辣的皇后李凤娘来执政，奸佞当道，朝政从宋孝宗时的清明转向腐败，宋光宗自己却不思朝政，沉湎于酒色之中。
光宗历来就与孝宗不和，宋孝宗逊位后他长期不去探望。绍熙五年（1194年），宋孝宗得病，宋光宗既不请人看病又不去探望孝宗，乃至孝宗病逝他也不服丧。因此，大臣韩侂胄和赵汝愚经过太皇太后允许，逼迫光宗退位。光宗只好让位于太子赵扩，自己闲居临安寿康宫，自称“太上皇”。赵扩主持完宋孝宗的葬礼，就登基做皇帝，是为宋宁宗。
庆元六年（1200年）春，由于光宗过于闷闷不乐就去世了，死后葬于永崇陵（今浙江绍兴东南35里处宝山）。
