宋光宗宋朝所有皇帝中比較昏庸的一位。他受父宋孝宗禪位而登基做皇帝以後，已經43歲。宋光宗體弱多病，又沒有安邦治國之才，而且光宗聽取姦臣讒言，罷免辛棄疾等主戰派大臣，又由當時著名的妒婦、心狠手辣的皇后李鳳娘來執政，姦佞當道，朝政從宋孝宗時的清明轉嚮腐敗，宋光宗自己卻不思朝政，沉湎於酒色之中。
光宗歷來就與孝宗不和，宋孝宗遜位後他長期不去探望。紹熙五年（1194年），宋孝宗得病，宋光宗既不請人看病又不去探望孝宗，乃至孝宗病逝他也不服喪。因此，大臣韓侂胄和趙汝愚經過太皇太後允許，逼迫光宗退位。光宗衹好讓位於太子趙擴，自己閑居臨安壽康宮，自稱“太上皇”。趙擴主持完宋孝宗的葬禮，就登基做皇帝，是為宋寧宗。
慶元六年（1200年）春，由於光宗過於悶悶不樂就去世了，死後葬於永崇陵（今浙江紹興東南35裏處寶山）。
