字希真，洛阳人。靖康、建炎间，屡召不起。绍兴三年（1133）以荐补右迪功郎，五年（1135）赐进士出身守秘书省正字（校正文字的官吏）。历兵部郎中、临安府通判、秘书郎、都官员外郎、两浙东路提点刑狱，致仕，居嘉禾。晚落致仕，除鸿胪少卿，秦桧死，依旧致仕。绍兴二十九年（1159）卒。有词三卷，名《樵歌》。
朱敦儒早年以清高自许，不愿做官。北宋末年大变乱发生，他经江西逃往两广，在岭南流落了一个时期。朱敦儒一生的七十多年中，做官的时间很短，长期隐居在江湖之中，被称为“天资旷逸，有神仙风致”的词人。所以，他的作品有很大一部分反映闲适的生活。
