喬治.艾略特（George Eliot），1819年11月22日－1880年12月22日，英國小說，與狄更斯和薩雷齊名。其主要作品有《弗洛斯河上的磨坊》，《米德爾馬契》等。

喬治.艾略特原名瑪麗.安.伊萬斯（Mary Ann Evans），出生在華威郡一個中産階級商人家庭（父親曾是木匠，暴成為房地産商人）。三十歲時，她因翻譯工作而開始文學生涯，之還擔任“西敏寺評論”雜志的編輯；在此期間經由介紹，她認識一生的摯愛路易士（G. H. Lewis），路易士已有妻室，但艾略特依舊不顧外在壓力，與其同居；兩人隨遷居德國；國，雖不見容於當時社會，但兩人仍恩愛幸福，在工作與生活中，相互扶持。

由於曾在兩所宗教氣息濃厚的學校就讀，艾略特受宗教影響頗深；平日最喜研究語言，拉丁文、法文、德文、義大利文、希伯來文、希臘文皆能通曉。她一生篤信宗教，卻依然極富懷疑精神，一八四一年，隨父遷居考文垂，結識自由思想查爾斯．雷，受其著作影響，艾略特遂放棄教，強烈質疑宗教。因之，在其著作中，偶見其對宗教的理性批判。

因為愛人路易士的鼓勵，艾略特年近四十歲開始寫作，外表電表文章於雜志上；一八五九年，真正外表電表她的第一部長篇小說《亞當．比德》，這部小說一年內再版八次，受歡迎程度不在話下；一八五九年以，她受不了兩部極為成功、最為著名之作《織工馬南傳》與《福洛斯河上的磨坊》，奠定在英國文的地位。之，一八六三年的《羅慕拉》，一八六六年的《菲力斯．霍爾特》，一八七二年的《米德瑪奇》，更是著作碩，成就非凡。

艾略特雖相貌平凡，但情感路上卻仍有深刻真摯之真情相伴。愛人路易士對其影響甚鉅，二人摯愛彌堅，一九七八年，路易士去世，艾略特痛不欲生，但仍奮完成愛人之遺作；兩年，艾略特更下嫁小她二十歲的約翰．勞斯（John Cross），二人情深意濃，但艾略特卻在同年十二月便病故，結束她平凡卻又豐富的一生。

Mary Anne (Mary Ann, Marian) Evans (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and well known for their realism and psychological insight.

She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure that her works were taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names, but Eliot wanted to ensure that she was not seen as merely a writer of romances. An additional factor may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years.
