字希真，洛陽人。靖康、建炎間，屢召不起。紹興三年（1133）以薦補右迪功郎，五年（1135）賜進士出身守秘書省正字（校正文字的官吏）。歷兵部郎中、臨安府通判、秘書郎、都官員外郎、兩浙東路提點刑獄，致仕，居嘉禾。晚落致仕，除鴻臚少卿，秦檜死，依舊致仕。紹興二十九年（1159）卒。有詞三捲，名《樵歌》。
朱敦儒早年以清高自許，不願做官。北宋末年大變亂發生，他經江西逃往兩廣，在嶺南流落了一個時期。朱敦儒一生的七十多年中，做官的時間很短，長期隱居在江湖之中，被稱為“天資曠逸，有神仙風緻”的詞人。所以，他的作品有很大一部分反映閑適的生活。
