（？～619） 隋末叛军首领。代郡武川（今内蒙古武川西）人，隋大将宇文述之子。年少时不守法度，长安人称他为“轻薄公子”。杨广为太子时，他领禁军，出入卧内，很受宠信。隋炀帝杨广即位，授他为太仆少卿，又以其弟士及娶南阳公主。化及受宠骄横，曾违禁与突厥交市，因公主的缘故，才免一死。宇文述临终前乞求炀帝看顾其子，炀帝于是授化及为右屯卫将军。大业年间，义军、叛军蜂起，炀帝在江都（今江苏扬州）不敢回京城，而称为“骁果”的随从禁卫多关中人，不愿从炀帝久驻扬州，打算自行回本土。统领骁果的武贲郎将司马德戡等得知此状，便集兵数万，于大业十四年（618）发动叛乱，推化及为主，缢杀炀帝，立秦孝王之子杨浩为帝。化及自称大丞相，引兵十余万西归。不久发生内讧，德勘等被杀。时东都群臣奉越王侗继帝位于洛阳，招瓦岗军领袖李密为太尉，使讨伐化及。双方战于黎阳（今河南浚县北），化及屡败，北走魏县（今河北大名西南），将士屡叛归李密。化及自知必败，叹曰：“人生故当死，岂不一日为帝乎！”于是毒杀杨浩，即帝位于魏县，国号许，改元天寿。武德二年（619），唐遣李神通攻化及，化及东走聊城（今山东聊城东北）。时窦建德已立夏国，遂以讨逆为名，往攻聊城，神通退兵。同年闰二月，建德攻陷聊城，擒化及，槛送襄国（今河北邢台），与其两子同时处斩，许亡。宇文化及被杀地点，《隋书》本传作河间；《北史》本传、两《唐书·窦建德传》作大陆；《资治通鉴》作襄国，今从《资治通鉴》。
在《大唐双龙传》里，宇文化及的形象是“身形高瘦，手足颀长，脸容古挫，神色冷漠，一对眼神深邃莫测，予人狠冷无情的印象，但亦另有一股震慑人心的霸气”，是乱世里的枭雄，卫道士眼中的祸魁！隋史中的宇文化及则“性凶险，不循法度，好乘肥挟弹，驰骛道中，由是长安谓之轻薄公子”，事实上，他本来只是个奸佞小人，和小说中那个野心勃勃的形象相去甚远，而且胆子也小，属于有贼心没贼胆的那种人。
他的叛变与上位，事实上，是宇文智及和杨广手下那些个惦记着关中家人的将士们策划怂恿的结果！在杀炀帝之后，宇文化及领着战斗力极强的隋朝正规军，对战李密竟数战不利，可见其指挥水平实在令人不敢恭维！战而不胜屡战屡败，心中自然郁闷，有时酒后甚至埋怨起弟弟来：都是你连累了我！首领做成这样，可谓窝囊至极！
不过他后来说了一句很有名的话：“人生故当死，岂不一日为帝乎！”于是杀了自己一手扶上位的傀儡秦王杨浩，自立为帝，国号为许，算是为他自己、为宇文家族挽回了一点颜面！只可惜他的帝位还没坐热乎，就被窦建德来了个全家处斩，宇文一族的历史，以此做了个轰轰烈烈的悲剧收场！
