（？～619） 隋末叛軍首領。代郡武川（今內蒙古武川西）人，隋大將宇文述之子。年少時不守法度，長安人稱他為“輕薄公子”。楊廣為太子時，他領禁軍，出入臥內，很受寵信。隋煬帝楊廣即位，授他為太僕少卿，又以其弟士及娶南陽公主。化及受寵驕橫，曾違禁與突厥交市，因公主的緣故，纔免一死。宇文述臨終前乞求煬帝看顧其子，煬帝於是授化及為右屯衛將軍。大業年間，義軍、叛軍蜂起，煬帝在江都（今江蘇揚州）不敢回京城，而稱為“驍果”的隨從禁衛多關中人，不願從煬帝久駐揚州，打算自行回本土。統領驍果的武賁郎將司馬德戡等得知此狀，便集兵數萬，於大業十四年（618）發動叛亂，推化及為主，縊殺煬帝，立秦孝王之子楊浩為帝。化及自稱大丞相，引兵十餘萬西歸。不久發生內訌，德勘等被殺。時東都群臣奉越王侗繼帝位於洛陽，招瓦崗軍領袖李密為太尉，使討伐化及。雙方戰於黎陽（今河南瀎縣北），化及屢敗，北走魏縣（今河北大名西南），將士屢叛歸李密。化及自知必敗，嘆曰：“人生故當死，豈不一日為帝乎！”於是毒殺楊浩，即帝位於魏縣，國號許，改元天壽。武德二年（619），唐遣李神通攻化及，化及東走聊城（今山東聊城東北）。時竇建德已立夏國，遂以討逆為名，往攻聊城，神通退兵。同年閏二月，建德攻陷聊城，擒化及，檻送襄國（今河北邢臺），與其兩子同時處斬，許亡。宇文化及被殺地點，《隋書》本傳作河間；《北史》本傳、兩《唐書·竇建德傳》作大陸；《資治通鑒》作襄國，今從《資治通鑒》。
在《大唐雙竜傳》裏，宇文化及的形象是“身形高瘦，手足頎長，臉容古挫，神色冷漠，一對眼神深邃莫測，予人狠冷無情的印象，但亦另有一股震懾人心的霸氣”，是亂世裏的梟雄，衛道士眼中的禍魁！隋史中的宇文化及則“性兇險，不循法度，好乘肥挾彈，馳騖道中，由是長安謂之輕薄公子”，事實上，他本來衹是個姦佞小人，和小說中那個野心勃勃的形象相去甚遠，而且膽子也小，屬於有賊心沒賊膽的那種人。
他的叛變與上位，事實上，是宇文智及和楊廣手下那些個惦記着關中傢人的將士們策劃慫恿的結果！在殺煬帝之後，宇文化及領着戰鬥力極強的隋朝正規軍，對戰李密竟數戰不利，可見其指揮水平實在令人不敢恭維！戰而不勝屢戰屢敗，心中自然鬱悶，有時酒後甚至埋怨起弟弟來：都是你連累了我！首領做成這樣，可謂窩囊至極！
不過他後來說了一句很有名的話：“人生故當死，豈不一日為帝乎！”於是殺了自己一手扶上位的傀儡秦王楊浩，自立為帝，國號為許，算是為他自己、為宇文傢族輓回了一點顔面！衹可惜他的帝位還沒坐熱乎，就被竇建德來了個全家處斬，宇文一族的歷史，以此做了個轟轟烈烈的悲劇收場！
