蕭繹於514年封湘東王，早年因病而一眼失明。547年出荊州，任荊州刺史、使持節、都督荊雍湘司郢寧梁南北秦九州諸軍事、鎮西將軍。侯景之亂時，梁武帝遣人至荊州宣讀密詔，授蕭繹為侍中、假黃鉞、大都督中外諸軍事、司徒承製，其餘職務如故。549年梁武帝餓死臺城後，蕭繹首先發兵攻滅自己的兄弟河東王蕭譽與邵陵王蕭綸，之後再命王僧辯率軍東下消滅侯景。552年侯景死後，蕭繹即帝位於江陵。當時，群臣中有人建議返回舊都建康，但蕭繹沒有同意。
蕭繹即帝位之後，其弟武陵王蕭紀稱帝於益州；於是蕭繹便派兵前往四川消滅蕭紀，同時也請求西魏出兵。此舉給了西魏可趁之機，益州因此淪落敵手。554年，蕭繹給西魏宇文泰寫信，要求按照舊圖重新劃定疆界，言辭又極為傲慢。宇文泰大為不滿，命令常山公於謹、大將軍楊忠等將領以5萬兵馬進攻江陵（今湖北江陵縣）。梁元帝戰敗，由御史中丞王孝祀作降文。隨後，便率太子等人到西魏軍營投降。不久為蕭察以土袋悶死。

南蘭陵（今江蘇武進）人。南朝梁畫傢，即梁元帝。字世誠，小名七符。武帝蕭衍第七子。生眇一目，既長好學，博涉技術。初封湘東王，承聖元年（552）即帝位，魏將於謹陷江陵，繹出降被殺。繹技巧是多方面的，善繪佛面、鹿鶴及景物寫生，以及善畫外國人物形象。嘗畫《聖僧像》，蕭衍為之題識。又畫《宣尼像》，並自書贊。時人謂之“三絶”。出任荊州刺史時繪《蕃客入朝圖》，描寫25國使者不同的相貌與服飾。唐代張彥遠疑《職貢圖》即是《蕃客入朝圖》。《職貢圖》捲，南朝，縱25釐米、橫198釐米，現藏中國歷史博物館。現所見《職貢圖》捲為北宋熙寧年間的摹本。圖捲原畫描繪南朝梁代外國使者25 人朝貢的形象。現已殘損，僅存12人，皆左嚮側身，身後楷書榜題，疏註國名及其山川、風俗、歷史及歷代交往情況、納貢物品等。列國使者自右至左為：滑國、波斯、百濟、龜茲、倭國、狼牙修、鄧至、周古柯、呵跋檀、鬍密丹、白題和末國等。一些美術傢認為，宋人此捲即據蕭繹的《職貢圖》摹繪。（據《古觀錄》捲十一、《石渠寶笈初編》21捲三十二記載。）此捲當時尚存25國使，圖後有贊一則，並有宋熙寧年間蘇頌題記，元康裏巎巎和王餘慶題跋。此捲清初為梁清標收藏，後入清宮，曾被溥儀攜至東北，流散殘損，凡其它十三國使及捲後題記贊跋俱佚。
蕭繹好文學，博覽群書，又通佛典，致力於編纂和著述。著述中最重要的是《金樓子》，全書15篇，《隋書·經籍志》著錄為10捲，至明代逐漸散佚。清代四庫館臣從《永樂大典》中輯得6捲，後來為鮑氏收入《知不足齋叢書》中。《金樓子·立言篇》在文學理論史上具有重要意義，文中提出了文的標準應該是“綺□ 紛披，宮徵靡曼，唇吻遒會,情靈搖蕩”,即文學作品需要具備文采、音律、感情這些因素，突破了過去文筆說的僅僅拘於有韻無韻的局限。其他如《聚書篇》、《著書篇》中記載書籍源流和自述著書的辛勤，都可以見出作者對文學和典籍的愛好。
蕭繹著有文集52捲、《漢書》註釋、《周易》講疏、《老子》講疏等共360餘捲。這些著述有不少出自門下文人之手，但也表明他對文學和學術的重視。文集久佚，今有明人張溥的輯本《梁元帝集》，收入《漢魏六朝百三傢集》中。其作品屬於典型的齊梁綺麗風格。
