萧绎于514年封湘东王，早年因病而一眼失明。547年出荆州，任荆州刺史、使持节、都督荆雍湘司郢宁梁南北秦九州诸军事、镇西将军。侯景之乱时，梁武帝遣人至荆州宣读密诏，授萧绎为侍中、假黄钺、大都督中外诸军事、司徒承制，其余职务如故。549年梁武帝饿死台城后，萧绎首先发兵攻灭自己的兄弟河东王萧誉与邵陵王萧纶，之后再命王僧辩率军东下消灭侯景。552年侯景死后，萧绎即帝位于江陵。当时，群臣中有人建议返回旧都建康，但萧绎没有同意。
萧绎即帝位之后，其弟武陵王萧纪称帝于益州；于是萧绎便派兵前往四川消灭萧纪，同时也请求西魏出兵。此举给了西魏可趁之机，益州因此沦落敌手。554年，萧绎给西魏宇文泰写信，要求按照旧图重新划定疆界，言辞又极为傲慢。宇文泰大为不满，命令常山公于谨、大将军杨忠等将领以5万兵马进攻江陵（今湖北江陵县）。梁元帝战败，由御史中丞王孝祀作降文。随后，便率太子等人到西魏军营投降。不久为萧察以土袋闷死。
梁元帝也是一个爱好读书与喜好文学的君主，自称“韬于文士，愧于武夫。”，曾主编《金楼子》等书；江陵被围城时，承圣三年十二月初二日，元帝入东合竹殿，命舍人高善宝放火焚烧图书14万卷，包括从建康为避兵灾而转移到江陵的8万卷书，自称“文武之道，今夜尽矣！”“读书万卷，犹有今日，故焚之。”。江陵焚书被视为中国的文化浩劫之一，王船山骂他：国家安危之际，却天天读《老子》，焉能不亡。

南兰陵（今江苏武进）人。南朝梁画家，即梁元帝。字世诚，小名七符。武帝萧衍第七子。生眇一目，既长好学，博涉技术。初封湘东王，承圣元年（552）即帝位，魏将于谨陷江陵，绎出降被杀。绎技巧是多方面的，善绘佛面、鹿鹤及景物写生，以及善画外国人物形象。尝画《圣僧像》，萧衍为之题识。又画《宣尼像》，并自书赞。时人谓之“三绝”。出任荆州刺史时绘《蕃客入朝图》，描写25国使者不同的相貌与服饰。唐代张彦远疑《职贡图》即是《蕃客入朝图》。《职贡图》卷，南朝，纵25厘米、横198厘米，现藏中国历史博物馆。现所见《职贡图》卷为北宋熙宁年间的摹本。图卷原画描绘南朝梁代外国使者25 人朝贡的形象。现已残损，仅存12人，皆左向侧身，身后楷书榜题，疏注国名及其山川、风俗、历史及历代交往情况、纳贡物品等。列国使者自右至左为：滑国、波斯、百济、龟兹、倭国、狼牙修、邓至、周古柯、呵跋檀、胡密丹、白题和末国等。一些美术家认为，宋人此卷即据萧绎的《职贡图》摹绘。（据《古观录》卷十一、《石渠宝笈初编》21卷三十二记载。）此卷当时尚存25国使，图后有赞一则，并有宋熙宁年间苏颂题记，元康里巎巎和王余庆题跋。此卷清初为梁清标收藏，后入清宫，曾被溥仪携至东北，流散残损，凡其它十三国使及卷后题记赞跋俱佚。
萧绎好文学，博览群书，又通佛典，致力于编纂和著述。著述中最重要的是《金楼子》，全书15篇，《隋书·经籍志》著录为10卷，至明代逐渐散佚。清代四库馆臣从《永乐大典》中辑得6卷，后来为鲍氏收入《知不足斋丛书》中。《金楼子·立言篇》在文学理论史上具有重要意义，文中提出了文的标准应该是“绮□ 纷披，宫徵靡曼，唇吻遒会,情灵摇荡”,即文学作品需要具备文采、音律、感情这些因素，突破了过去文笔说的仅仅拘于有韵无韵的局限。其他如《聚书篇》、《著书篇》中记载书籍源流和自述著书的辛勤，都可以见出作者对文学和典籍的爱好。
萧绎著有文集52卷、《汉书》注释、《周易》讲疏、《老子》讲疏等共360余卷。这些著述有不少出自门下文人之手，但也表明他对文学和学术的重视。文集久佚，今有明人张溥的辑本《梁元帝集》，收入《汉魏六朝百三家集》中。其作品属于典型的齐梁绮丽风格。
