夏代
伯益，姓嬴，名益，古代嬴姓各族的祖先。臯陶之子。
原姓伊氏，字貴凱，又字虞餘，相傳益善於畜牧和狩獵，助禹治水有功，夏禹對舜說：“非予能成，亦大費為輔。”舜對
伯益說：“咨爾費，贊禹功，其賜爾皂遊。爾後嗣將大出。”因而被禹選為繼承人。《史記》記載禹死後由益繼位，但四方諸侯比較屬意禹之子啓，於是益讓位予啓後隱居到箕山南麓。但據《竹書紀年》記載，禹死後由禹之子啓繼位，而益因與啓發生爭執，帝啓六年，被啓殺死。
相傳益發明鑿井技術，後來被奉為井神。這反映出遠古時代的人們已經掌握這種技術，懂得利用井水解决生活用水和灌溉農田。益的兒子為嬴若木，夏啓九年（中國斷代工程計算為公元前2061年），被啓封在徐（徐戎，今山東中南部，郯城一帶）。

蔡邕在《漢交阯都尉鬍夫人黃氏神誥》明言：“黃氏出自伯翳”。《湖南黃氏世譜•世次韻語》亦稱：“大費生民始”。
