楚國

楚文王，原名
熊貲，楚武王之子。從丹陽遷都於郢（今湖北省江陵市西北），采用“板築法”築城。繼承乃父遺志，尚武強國，滅息、鄧、申、夔諸國，大大擴充了楚國的版圖。楚文王六年（前684年）楚出兵伐蔡國，敗蔡於莘，俘蔡哀侯。蔡哀侯嚮楚文王稱贊息媯乃天下第一美女。於是文王訪息國，受到息侯接待，卻乘機滅息，占有息媯。息媯生熊艱、熊頵二子。
楚地之荊山産玉。楚人卞和得一璞玉，獻於楚王，被兩次處以刖刑。文王命工匠剖此璞石，取得寶玉，稱為“和氏璧”。文王頒定《僕區之法》，規定：“盜所隱器，與盜同罪。”
楚文王十年（前680年）秋七月，楚師入蔡。十二年（前678年）滅鄧。楚文王十三年（前677年）出師抵禦巴國入侵，大敗而還，郢都城門官鬻拳閉門不納，迫使其轉兵伐黃國，大破之。還師及湫時，得病，至六月卒。鬻拳自殺殉葬。子熊艱立，是為莊敖。
