外丙，姓子名外丙，一名勝，甲骨文作“
卜丙”，亦稱外壬。商湯的次子。《史記·殷本紀》記載：“湯崩，太子太丁未立而卒，於是乃立太丁之弟外丙，是為帝外丙。”因為太子太丁早死，兒子太小，所以就立了外丙。
外丙即位後，仲虺、伊尹二相繼續輔政，以寬治民。外丙尊商湯為“宗湯”，給予了隆重的祭祀。《禮記·祭法》說：“商人祖契而宗湯。”甲骨文中有不少祭祀太丁的記載，因為太丁是商湯的長子，雖然沒有繼位，但仍然作為直係的先王之一奉祀於祖廟。
“外丙即位三年，崩”，傳位與仲壬。
