絶句，或稱截句，斷句，短句；或以為“截取律之半”以便入樂傳唱。各解釋並不一致。五言四句而又乎律詩規的小詩，叫做五言絶句。有仄起、平起二格。此源於漢代樂府小詩，深受六朝民歌影響。道唐代與近律詩如孿生姐妹，蒂雙花，以其嶄新的異彩出現在詩上。僅二十字，便能展現出一幅幅清新的畫圖，傳達一種真切的意境。因小見大，以少總多，在短章中包含着豐富的內容，是五言絶句的最大特色。
