七言古诗，是中国古代诗歌体裁的一种，诗体全篇每句七字或以七字句为主。
它起源于民谣。先秦时期除《诗经》、《楚辞》已有七言句式外，荀子的《成相篇》就是摹仿民间歌谣写成的以七言为主的杂言体韵文。西汉时期除《汉书》所载的《楼护歌》、《上郡歌》外，还有司马相如的《凡将篇》、史游的《急就篇》等七言通俗韵文。
东汉七言、杂言民谣为数更多，如东汉末年的《小麦谣》、《城上乌》（司马彪《续汉书．五行志》）、《桓灵时童谣》“举秀才”（葛洪《抱朴子·审举》）都是很生动、通俗流畅的七言和杂言民间作品。相传汉武帝曾会聚群臣作柏梁台七言联句，但据后人考证，实系伪托，并不可靠。
魏曹丕的《燕歌行》是现存的第一首文人创作的完整七言诗。以后汤惠林、鲍照都有七言作品。鲍照的《拟行路难》18首，不仅在诗歌内容上有很大的扩展，同时还把原来七言诗的句句用韵变为隔句用韵和可以换韵，为七言体的发展开出了新路。
从梁至隋代七言体诗歌逐渐增多，至唐代七言诗才真正发达起来。七言诗的出现，为诗歌提供了一个新的、有更大容量的形式，丰富了中国古典诗歌的艺术表现力。
