The male pheasant flies away,
Lazily moving his wings.
The man of my heart! --
He has brought on us this separation.


The pheasant has flown away,
But from below, from above, comes his voice.
Ah! the princely man! --
He afflicts my heart.


Look at that sun and moon!
Long, long do I think.
The way is distant;
How can he come to me?


All ye princely men,
Know ye not his virtuous conduct?
He hates none; he covets nothing; --
What does he which is not good?

  《诗经》中曾以雉之朝飞作为爱情生活的象征。琴曲继承了这一主题,并流传着两个不同的故事。一个故事是说:卫女殉情而死,她的褓母在墓前哀伤地奏起她生前抚弄的琴,忽见两只雉鸟双双飞去。
  
  (杨雄《琴清英》)另一个故事说:牧犊子终年放牧打柴,直至暮年仍是孤身一人,他见雉鸟都是成双成队地愉快飞翔,非常羡慕,愈加感到自己的孤独凄凉,伤心地唱到:“雉朝飞兮鸣相和,雌雄群兮于山阿,我独伤兮未有室,时将暮兮可奈何?”
  
  (晋崔豹:《古今注》)现存琴谱沿用了后一个解题。魏武帝时有个卢姓宫女,擅长此曲。
  
  (《乐府古题要解》)可见它是渊远流长的古曲。清代琴家称赞说:“极乎曲之圣,而音之神也。”“逸韵幽致,含恨无限。”
  
  (《琴苑心传》后记)“奇音妙趣,《雉朝飞》为最。”
  
  (《诚一堂琴谱》后记)存谱初见于《神奇秘谱》,明末的《松弦馆琴谱》因其节奏急促而不予收录。
