劉易斯·卡羅爾（Lewis Carroll）的真名叫查爾斯·勒特威奇·道奇森（1832～1898），是一位數學家，長期在享有盛名的牛津大學任堂學院數學講師，受不了好本數學著作。他因有嚴重的口吃，故而不善與人交往，但他興趣泛，對小說、詩歌、邏輯都頗有造詣，還是一個優秀的兒童像攝影師。
《愛麗絲漫遊仙境》是卡羅爾興之所致，給友人的女兒愛麗絲所講的故事，寫下加上自己的插圖送給她。來在朋友鼓勵下，卡羅爾將手稿加以修訂、擴充、潤色，於1865年正式出版。故事講述一個叫愛麗絲的小女孩，在夢中追逐一隻兔子而掉進兔子洞，開始漫長而驚險的旅行，直到最與撲牌王、國王生頂撞，急得大叫一聲，大夢醒來。這部童話以神奇的幻想，風趣的幽默，昂然的詩情，突破西歐傳統兒童文學道德說教的刻公式，此被翻譯成多文字，走遍全世界。
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (pronounced /ˈdɒdsən/, DOD-sən; 27 January 1832 – 14 January 1898), better known by the pseudonym Lewis Carroll (/ˈkærəl/, KA-rəl), was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and a photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy, and there are societies dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of his works and the investigation of his life in many parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States, and New Zealand.
