阿来1959 年阿來生於四川西北部藏區衹有20多戶人傢的小山寨。
阿來初中畢業回鄉務農，後考入馬爾康師範學校。中專師範，遂成迄今為止最高學歷。畢業後做中學教師近五年。
1982 年開始詩歌創作。80年代中期以後，逐漸轉嚮小說，並調到阿壩州文化局所屬的文學雜志《草地》當編輯。
1996 年阿來辭職，應聘至成都《科幻世界》雜志，從普通編輯幹起，1998年成為主編，統領至今，現下轄《科幻世界》、《飛》等雜志共計六種。
1994年鼕，阿來完成長篇小說《塵埃落定》。1998年由人民文學出版社出版，摘取2000年第五屆“茅盾文學奬”，成為中國最年輕的茅盾文學奬獲得者。
