鐵凝早期作品描寫生活中普通的人與事，特別是細膩地描寫人物的內心，從中反映人們的理想與追求，矛盾與痛苦，語言柔婉清新。
1986年和1988年先後發表反省古老歷史文化、關註女性生存的兩部中篇小說《麥稭垛》和《棉花垛》，標志着鐵凝步入一個新的文學創作時期。1988年鐵凝還寫成第一部長篇小說《玫瑰門》，它一改鐵凝以往那和諧理想的詩意境界，透過幾代女人生存競爭間的較量廝殺，徹底撕開了生活中醜陋和血污的一面。這個時期，鐵凝的小說明顯地轉嚮對傳統文化心理的反思，主題也趨嚮多義性，手法更富有變化，藝術上保持了以往的風格，筆觸又嚮深沉、冷峻方向發展。
生平
鐵凝父為著名畫傢鐵揚，畢業於中央戲劇學院；母親是聲樂教授，畢業於天津音樂學院。
1975年－1979年在河北博野農村插隊，期間發表了從處女作《會飛的鐮刀》。
1979年回城，在保定地區文聯《花山》編輯部任小說編輯。
1982年發表短篇小說《哦，香雪》，獲全國優秀短篇小說奬。同年，中篇小說《沒有紐扣的紅襯衫》獲全國優秀中篇小說奬。據此改編的電影《紅衣少女》曾獲中國電影"金雞奬""百花奬"最佳故事片奬。
1984年《六月的話題》獲全國優秀短篇小說奬。同年，成為河北省文聯專業作傢。
1985年初，在中國作傢協會第4次全國代表大會上當選為理事，是該協會有史以來最年輕的一位理事。
1986年發表中篇小說《麥稭垛》。
1988年發表中篇小說《棉花垛》，發表第一部長篇小說《玫瑰門》。
1994年，長篇小說《無雨之城》由出版，成為暢銷書。
1996年10月，當選為河北省作傢協會主席。同年底，在中國作傢協會第5次全國代表大會上，副主席。
1997年，散文集《女人的白夜》獲中國首屆"魯迅文學奬"。
1999年，中篇小說《永遠有多遠》發表，後獲第二屆"魯迅文學奬"，首屆"老捨文學奬"。
2000年，長篇小說《大浴女》出版。
2001年，在中國作傢協會第6次代表大會上，再次當選為副主席。
2004年，《鐵凝日記》出版。
2006年1月，長篇小說《笨花》出版。
2006年11月12日，當選為中國作傢協會主席。不過亦有媒體報道，鐵凝在全國委員與全委會票選得票數全都倒數第一。
2007年4月26日，50歲的鐵凝和比她大3歲的經濟學家、燕京華僑大學校長華生在北京結婚。
