本名石平莊一。1960年出生於東京,成蹊大學經濟係畢業。七歲時就想當作傢,卻因為成功之路不容易,且對人有輕微的恐懼癥,先在別的行業轉了幾圈,做過地下鐵工人、保安、倉庫管理,也曾任職日本廣告公司,最後以自由文案工作者身份活躍於業界。寫作時喜歡聆聽古典音樂,所以作品非常具有音樂性,流暢起伏,高潮迭起。
石田衣良初試啼聲的第一部作品立刻就得到了“ALL讀物推理小說新人奬”的副賞,接下來更以第二部作品得到了日本最具權威的大衆小說奬“直木賞”,開始了他的作傢生涯。2001年的作品《娼年》和2002年的《骨音》分別為第126回及第128回直木賞候補作,2003年以《4TEEN》獲得第129回直木賞。作品題材廣泛,包括青少年犯罪小說、經濟犯罪懸疑小說、情欲小說、愛情小說,都是他的創作領域。
在石田衣良得到直木賞後,日本文學評論傢給他一個響亮的稱號――“現代感覺的妙手”,並以此稱號為他做了
Ira Ishida (石田 衣良, Ishida Ira, born March 8, 1960) is a Japanese novelist and TV commentator.
After graduating from Seikei University, he worked for a number of different advertising production companies and as a freelance copywriter. In 1997, he published his first short story collection, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, which won the 36th All Yomimono New Mystery Writer's Prize. In 2003, he won the Naoki Prize for 4teen.
His novels describe the culture of young people in Japan, particularly young women and otaku without a college education. Many of his works have been adapted for manga and television. As an actor, he made his first appearance in a leading role in the 2006 film Love My Life.
Ishida's pen name, Ishida Ira, was derived by splitting his real family name Ishidaira.
