晚清時期，1884年在臺北電信局工作。1891年與鄰村鄭氏女結婚。1893年鄭氏病故，誓不再娶（無子嗣）。1895年臺灣被割讓日本，參加抗日軍，失敗後回閩侯入母校英華書院任教。1898年再度赴臺灣，加入興中會。考取臺南地區法院嘉義支部通譯，聯絡島上愛國志士，進行反清抗日活動。1899年因日本偵捕返回閩侯。1902年考入上海海關任職，組織旅滬福建學生會。1905年創辦福州閱報社。1909年由上海調往江西省九江海關工作，設立當陽書報社宣傳革命。創辦商團，舉辦軍事訓練班，聯絡新軍，為武裝反清作準備。1911年10 月武昌起義後，23日九江響應起義，任九江軍政府民政長。1912年1月任南京國民臨時政府參議院議長。1913年4月出席北京第一屆國會，被選為參議院議長。二次革命爆發，國民黨議員離京南下。二次革命失敗後於12月赴日本。1914年離日本赴美洲，開展籌餉和黨務活動。1916年6月袁世凱死，7月離美回國，8月任廣州孫中山大元帥府外交部部長，1918年10月被選舉為參議院院長兼憲法會議議長。1921年1月任非常國會議長。1922年出任福建省省長。1923年2月被召回任大本營建設部部長兼治河督辦。10月在廣州召開中國國民黨改組會議，負責國民黨改組事宜。
大革命時期，1924 年1月國民黨第一次全國代表大會在廣州舉行，被選為中央執行委員，任命為國民黨海外部部長。1925年3月孫中山逝世後，為西山會議派領袖之一。7月廣州國民政府成立，被選為常委，多次被選為西山會議派中央常委兼海外部部長。1926年元旦國民黨“二中”全會召開，通過《彈劾西山會議决議案》，受警告處分，會後不久赴南京主持中山陵建設。
土地革命戰爭時期，1927年9月寧、漢、滬三方合流，被推為南京國民政府常務委員。1928年9月任國民黨中央政治會議委員，10月任國民政府立法院副院長。1929年1月任國民政府任務委員會委員長，國民黨中央監察委員。1931年2月赴菲、澳、美、英、德、法諸國慰問僑胞並視察黨務。3月還在國外，國民黨中央常委會選其為立法院院長。4月國民黨中央4名監委通電彈劾蔣介石，時雖在國外，也列名其中。 12月蔣介石下野，被推為國民政府代理主席，並確定主席為國傢元首，不負實際政治責任。1932年元旦就職。此後國民政府雖多次改組，都一直擔任國民政府主席。1932年“一·二八”淞滬抗戰後，主持召開國難會議，強烈抗議日本承認“偽滿洲國”。 1935年11月召開的國民黨第五次全國代表大會上，被推選為常務監察委員。1936年12月“西安事變”時，代理國民黨中央政治委員會主席，明確表示 “討伐令不可下”，力主和平解决，認為“張學良部隊是愛國的”，促成西安事變和平解决。1937年1月4日、2月18日以主席名義連下赦免令、復權令，但蔣介石拒不執行，反而長期幽禁張學良。
抗日戰爭時期，1937年日本侵略者製造“七·七” 滬溝橋事變，全面發動侵華戰爭。遂號召“全民奮起，全力抵抗”。10月國民政府西遷重慶，隨衹身入蜀。不久北平、南京相繼成立偽政權，便發表嚴正聲明，並發佈明令通緝漢姦頭目。1938年3月赴武漢主持國民黨臨時全國代表大會，通過《抗戰救國綱領》。7月召開國民參政會緻詞，手書“抗戰必勝”來激勵全國軍民。12月汪精衛叛逃投敵，以國民黨中央監察常委身份力主開除汪精衛黨籍，並明令通緝。1941年12月9日以國傢主席名言，嚮德、意、日三國宣戰。此後致力於廢除美、英等不平等條約。1943年1月中美、中英新約簽署，不勝欣喜，特邀宋慶齡、於右任等國民黨元老合影。
1943年8月1日因車禍在重慶逝世，終年75歲。國民政府為他舉行隆重國葬。葬福建省連江縣青芝山。中共中央緻唁電說：“林公領導抗戰，功在國傢。”《新華日報》發表社論《為元首逝世緻哀》。
1979年，中共中央認為林森“是著名的老一輩民主革命傢”。
林森撰題聯
樹立農村基礎；
養育民族健兒。
——題福建省閩侯縣祥謙鎮鳳港學校
林森主張辦學育人，不但思路清晰，而且富有遠見卓識。堅信抓“教育大廈牢固先取决於基礎”的理念，因此當年常對鄉人解說“小學是基礎，基礎打不好，上進就睏難”。鳳港學校創辦不久，他特意約請辛亥革命領導人黃興將軍為學校題詞，手書“國民始基”，交托鄉人以字模製成匾，懸挂在鳳港小學禮堂，以喚起學子牢記學業的成就始於足下，邁好起步就要紮實努力。後來林森也在校門口撰題了這副楹聯。這兩處歷史遺跡至今猶存。為了進一步激發家乡民衆興學發展的活力，林森還積極獻策富有建設性、鼓勵性教學管理智見。如提出：“要物色誠聘胜任的校長人選”；“學校務須設民主董事會”；“要求學生穿戴（發型一律去辮）及儀容統一規定”；“對學生全免勉贈文化課本，對家庭睏難的子女，放寬可免穿履入學”等等。這在當時堅持辦學教育的進步舉措，具有其現實意義，起到促進教育發展的積極作用。因此，鳳港小學這所始建於1913年，經歷91個春秋的鄉村小學，成為當地開展基礎發展教育的搖籃，為國傢和民族培育出不少的社會英才。林森的貢獻功不可沒。

《黃花碧血集》是紀念黃花崗七十二烈士輓聯專集。
出處進退與任聖冥符，運會啓風雲，曠代勳華民族史；

後人為紀念一代偉人劉伯溫，許多地方建造了劉文成公祠廟。據考查，共有16處，分別為武儀縣俞源村劉伯溫草堂、麗水（處州）富山劉文成公祠（抗日戰爭時期遭敵機炸毀僅存遺址）、青田縣城劉文成公祠、青田縣石門洞劉文成公祠、青田縣林坑村劉文成公祠、甌海區白水村劉文成公祠、樂清市白象鎮大港村劉文成公祠 、瑞安市穗豐村劉基廟、瑞安市鮑田鎮鮑六村劉基廟、瑞安市平陽坑劉文成公祠、蒼南縣莒溪鎮劉文成公廟、平陽縣宋橋鎮劉文成公祠，文成縣珊溪鎮帝師祠、文成縣李井村劉文成公祠、文成縣大學鎮石墳洋村劉文成公祠。這些祠廟先後大都列入縣、市、省文物保護單位。南田誠意伯廟位於文成縣南田鎮新宅村華蓋山南麓，敕建於明•天順三年（1459年），清乾隆、道光、鹹豐歷經維修，現主體建築仍保留明代形製和風格。占地面積近3000多平方米。廟前有“帝師”、“王佐”兩座牌坊及照壁等。廟為保存完整的明代建築。1980年全面維修。今劉基廟的靈位上擺放的“開國翊運文臣資善大夫贈太師謚文成護軍誠意伯”牌位保存完好，每逢祭祀奉之尊位配上劉基畫像供裔孫叩拜，以表敬仰。
受氏姓周傢，歷秦漢晉唐以迄明清，看纍代稱帝稱王廟祀幾如林縣遠；
發祥由陶水，從魯齊河洛迨遷閩越，溯上世自南自北族居傳到幹官興。

1938年5月9日，武漢各界組織了“王銘章上將治喪委員會”。王銘章之弟王少容赴漢口市商會參加治喪（因王銘章之子女當時均幼小，王道鴻13歲、王道義11歲、王道綱9歲、王道智7歲、王道忠不滿1歲，不能到漢口），由王少容代表將軍傢屬主持公祭典禮的答謝儀式。靈樞運抵武漢大智門車站時，武漢人民群衆，萬人空巷，前往迎靈，由當時湖北省主席及前國府中央各部院代表在車站舉行隆重肅穆的迎靈大會。中國共産黨中央委員會代表吳玉章、董必武，八路軍代表羅炳輝、齊光等領導同志都參加了迎靈公祭。上聯“雲暗”，比喻抗日烽火彌漫山東上空。“魯”，山東簡稱。“蜀道”，指四川新都。下聯“昭”，謂彰明，顯示。“黨國”，指國民黨和中華民國的合稱。“著”，謂明顯，顯著。聯語切事切地切人，言簡而哀情深沉，評贊恰如其分。
執幹戈以衛邦傢，拚取忠誠垂宇宙；
聞鼓鼙而思將帥，忍標遺像肅清高。

賀贈林森聯
開山開國志；
樹木樹人心。
——北京故宮古物陳列所主任柯璜贈林森
柯璜（1878-1963），字定礎，號樂天野人，浙江省黃岩縣桐嶼人。北京京師大學堂畢業，歷任山西大學美術教員、山西博物館館長、山西圖書館館長、北京故宮古物陳列所主任等職。當代書法傢、美術傢、社會活動傢。抗日戰爭時期，柯璜顛沛流離到了陪都重慶後，孔祥熙為他安排了一棟別墅小洋樓。住了不久，柯璜便感到彆扭，執意要搬出去。後來安排他住到歌樂山公寓，與國民政府主席林森做了鄰居。柯璜和林森本來就是很要好的舊友，住到一起後就更加親密，為林森別墅題寫匾額“大禹會諸侯於塗山歌樂於此”，題寫撰贈了這副對聯及鬆柏中堂畫。林森把字畫挂在客廳內。林森遊覽峨眉山後帶回一支異形老藤手杖送給柯璜，並贈詩一首。同住歌樂山的還有馮玉祥、於佑任、臧剋傢等人，他們經常會聚在一志談論抗戰時局。柯璜在重慶生活無着，衹得靠賣書畫為生，有時朋友也接濟一點，勉強維持清苦的生活，後來經濟越來越睏難，就搬到雲頂寺內居住。林森、於右任等常來雲頂寺，與柯璜一起在禪房裏談詩論畫，揮毫潑墨；並與董必武、馮玉祥、馬寅初、郭沫若等交往。柯璜在雲頂寺著《歷代權姦傳》，鞭撻汪偽漢姦，並留下許多書法鎸刻作品。林森去世後，柯璜為他操辦喪事，張羅為林森塑立銅像，並親自題寫碑文。新中國成立後，是全國政協二、三屆委員，政協山西省常委；還擔任過山西省美協主席、中國美術傢協會理事、中國書法傢協會理事等職。1963年11月因病在太原逝世，享壽85歲。政協全國委員會、中央統戰部，國傢副主席董必武、國務院總理周恩來、副總理陳毅，以及李雪峰、王世英等都送了花圈。
悼輓林森聯
繼國父之受終民主，以令百揆；

民國時名聯。上聯“易君左”，湖南省漢壽縣人。民國作傢，與郭沫若、鬱達夫齊名。他寫有《揚州閑話》一書，此文行文尖刻，佻薄揚州人，招來駡名，易君左很不服氣，便在南京報刊上撰文爭辯，名噪一時。因《閑話揚州》引起揚州人不滿。下聯“林子超”，即國民政府主席林森，字子超。林森當了國府主席後，卻無心政治，被稱為“超然派”，成了蔣介石的一件“擺設”。世人對他不無譏諷，新聞界尤甚。而林森正是“超然”對待蔣介石，處事謹慎，鴉雀無聲，纔坐穩了國府主席的寶座。當時南京有傢報紙當時公開出下聯徵對，然而該報既沒有被“整頓”，也沒有被“停刊”，因為林森主席對此不予置理，一笑而過。數天後，揚州三傑之一張丹斧以《閑話揚州》風波續出下聯。此聯對仗工整、貼切，語意深刻巧妙，一時傳為趣談，到處流傳。

〖鰥居之謎〗
1931年12月寧粵紛爭結束，國民黨四次一中全會在南京召開，林森當選國民政府主席。蔣介石表面上對林森很尊重，暗地裏卻處處進行製約，使林森無一點實權，無所作為。林森自此成了一個十足的傀儡主席，成了蔣介石的一件“擺設”。林森身居高位，深居簡出，一生不嗜煙酒，不近女色，頗多怪癖。在國民黨要員中，他是一位“元老”，又是一位帶有一點神秘色彩的古怪老人。最令人費解的，還是林森鰥居獨處的生活方式。他從年輕時起就獨往獨來，及至當了國府主席以後，仍然孤身一人。堂堂國府主席，不要說是娶一個夫人，就是娶三個、五個的，也沒人敢怎麽樣。按理說，有個夫人在側，平日生活上便可以有個照料，公開場合也可以做做門面。林森的周圍人也曾為他張羅過，可他堅辭不允。對此許多人甚表納罕，頗覺蹊蹺，特別是國民黨要員中那些妻妾成群的人，更感到難以理解。是林森不食人間煙火？還是他不懂感情？當然都不是。在一個偶然的機會，這其中的秘密被揭開了。這要從林森珍藏的一具白骨骷髏說起。林森嚮來喜愛收藏古董。他的住所裏，到處擺設着各種古玩。閑暇之時，常常賞玩再三。在他收藏的衆多古玩中，有一件林森極為珍視的東西：一具白骨骷髏。林森並將它擺在居室的顯要處，十分刺目。據林森的隨從講，林森對這一具白骨骷髏珍愛異常，視同生命。常獨自對其凝視良久，陷入深深的沉思。據說，有人偶然來到國府主席的住所，猛然間看到這個白骨骷髏，不禁毛骨悚然，駭然中諾諾而退，竟至驚悸數日。後來，又有人在國府主席的辦公桌上看到過這具白骨骷髏。於是關於國府主席的傳聞便紛紛揚揚，神秘中夾雜着恐怖。謎團越來越大，那些專事刨根究底的人，便四下打聽，打聽不出結果來。某日，一位稍懂一點解剖知識的人看到了這具骷髏，他一眼便看出這是一個女性的頭骨。消息一經傳出，聞者莫不張口結舌。衆人百思不得其解：國府主席不近女色，何來女人骷髏頭？既不近女色，要這女人骷髏頭作什麽？但是，林森畢竟是國府主席，當時即使是再好奇的人，也不敢、也不好意思嚮主席當面發問。愛刨根究底的好事之徒，於是把目標對準國府主席的身邊人。
國府主席有個貼身隨從朱某，跟隨林森多年，對林森的生活隱秘瞭解較多。一天，朱某被熟人請到一座酒樓，宴席擺開後，朱某見在座各位均為摯友，頓時來了豪興，一陣豪飲之後，朱某已有些微醉，乘着酒興，衆人便嚮他問起國府主席的白骨骷髏一事。朱某始不肯說，禁不住衆友人的再三追問，他披露了這個秘密，解開了謎團。據朱某講，那具白骨骷髏，是國府主席表妹的遺骨。他帶着酒意，斷斷續續地嚮衆人敘述了國府主席青年時代的一段頗為沉重的羅曼史：福建一帶的舊時風俗，小女婿大媳婦很普遍，男子娶妻時年齡一般都很小。林森也不例外。10 幾歲還在美國人辦的教會學校讀書時，便由傢中長輩作主，迎娶比他年齡大的鄭氏為妻。婚前他與鄭氏素不相識，從未謀面，故婚後並無感情。而他對自己的表妹卻十分傾慕，一往情深。他與表妹從小性格相投，處處以大哥哥的身份關心愛護着她。兩人雖算不上青梅竹馬，卻心心相印。表妹從小受家庭熏陶，雖然沒有進過洋學堂，卻知書識禮。她自幼溫柔幽嫻，性格內嚮，對林森的愛始終是默默的、深沉的，於不聲不響中藴含着熾熱的情感。她對林森的這種柔情密意，除了林森以外，誰也沒有覺察。林森娶妻以後，表妹的這種默默的愛沒有絲毫稍減。1893年林森的發妻鄭氏突然患病，不久不治而亡。這時林森跟表妹的感情更加濃烈，難捨難分。正當他們熱戀的時候，林森表妹的父母突然决定將女兒許配給一個華僑巨商的兒子。婚事是背着表妹悄悄進行的，等到表妹知道時，一切都已成定局，難以改變了。表妹對這門親事竭力反對，拚死不從，然而木已成舟，她的反抗沒有什麽效果。在這緊要關頭，她不顧衆人議論和父母的阻攔，大膽地跑到林森的身邊，嚮他表明了堅貞不渝的愛情，她懇求林森帶她一同私奔，遠赴重洋到國外謀生。滿含熱淚哭訴道：“哪怕過流浪生活，也决無怨言。”表妹的一片癡情，使林森激動萬分。當得知表妹將要嫁給一個華僑巨商的兒子時，內心十分痛苦。不能讓表妹失望，可是又無法使表妹不失望。帶着表妹一道私奔，這並不是什麽難事，當時正好孫中山先生電邀他遠赴他鄉，這是一個絶好的機會。可是一想到革命剛剛開始，常年在外東奔西走，帶着一個女人有諸多不便。再說當時的環境險惡，隨時可能有生命危險。苦思再三，終於沒有答應表妹的懇求。就在表妹婚期到來之前，懷着痛苦與深深的負疚，離開了家乡。林森的離傢出走，使他的表妹悲憤至極，她感到完全絶望了。眼見婚期一天天逼近。在一天凌晨，她躲開傢人的註意，悄悄跑到樹林裏，吊死在一棵樹上。林森在外得知表妹自殺的消息後，內心受到深深的刺激和強烈的譴責。從那以後，發誓終生不再接近女性。
〖國傢元首〗
國民政府主席為國傢元首，當時國民黨派係林立，蔣介石任國傢主席遭到各派反對，被迫下野後就將國民政府主席改為虛職，不負實際責任，不兼其他職務，使五院獨立負責。林森對此有清醒認識，曾說“我的地位相當於神龕中的神位，受人景仰而不失其威儀，自然能保持廟堂之肅穆，傢宅之安康。若神主顯靈，則反倒一室彷徨，怪異百出。國傢主席是虛君地位，其意義在於垂拱而治，不該去管的就不要去管，讓有辦法的人放手去做嘛。”林森生性淡泊儉樸，不嗜煙酒，不近女色。他具有一個優良政治傢所應擁有的品質：正直寬容，溫和穩健，不徇私情。卻無心政治，被稱為“超然派”，他的官邸十分簡陋，如同普通民居，甚至沒有衛生設備。而因為房屋少，僅有的一個班警衛衹能藉住在鄰居的空屋裏。他因公外出時一般都是輕車簡從，而私行則多是獨自一人。
林森當了國府主席後，成了蔣介石的一件“擺設”，世人對他不無譏諷，新聞界尤甚。對待蔣介石，處事謹慎，鴉雀無聲，纔坐穩了國府主席的寶座。林森嚴格約束自己和手下，如洛陽警備司令陳繼承來拜訪，他拒絶接見說：“以後武官直接去見蔣，文官去見汪，不必到我這裏來啦。”一個熟人找林森要個職務，林森說：用人要經過人事部門，不要找我。林森對手下的要求是：不發表意見，不參加宴會，不寫條子。一次，他的秘書想要到一個政府的重要宴會上開開眼界，被他呵斥：當好你的秘書就行了，認識那些要人幹什麽？林森平易近人，南京浮橋如意裏2號是他的公館，從住處到國民政府不足一華裏，林森一嚮步行，身着長袍馬褂，布鞋布襪，持手杖，附近的居民都認得他。除了浮橋的公館外，林森在南京最著名的住處就是桂林石屋。這棟別墅建在中山陵以東，靈𠔌以西的高阜上，因周圍遍種桂花而得名，在這種地方蓋別墅，不是一般人可以想象的，蔣介石當初蓋小紅山官邸，也是打報告，費了不少周折的；林主席可以例外，他不犯嫌，連蔣介石也不會去說他。
林森曾經彈劾過蔣介石，林森對蔣的態度是配合而不迎合，禮貌而不恭敬。一次，散步的林森遇到了戒備森嚴簇擁而來的蔣介石。林森即在道旁的小廟賞玩古董，並不迎接或避讓，直到蔣介石走來致意“主席好”。西安事變後．蔣介石返回南京，衆人爭相嚮蔣介石致意，林森則站在一邊。蔣介石看到後，上前說：有纍主席受驚了。林森對秘書說：明明是他受了驚，怎麽反倒是我受驚了，他這是做給人看的。可見林森對蔣仍存芥蒂。抗戰後，林森遷至重慶，見到蔣介石的別墅如世外桃源，贊嘆不已。蔣介石就將別墅贈給林森，稱為“林園”。晚年林森漸漸喪失了對政治的興趣，寄情花草，古玩。他雖然喜歡古玩，卻捨不得花許多錢去買，他一般出的價位都在三五元上下，從不出高價。國民政府還都南京後，根據他的遺願將他的上千件藏品字畫編號，放到一傢古玩店抽簽拍賣，本來這些古董字畫不值什麽錢（而且有許多贋品），但由於是林故主席遺物，蓋有“青芝老人鑒賞”朱印，這批大多是贋品的字畫身價頓升，不到三天，所有藏品即被搶購一空，共賣得銀元近萬元。而所得之款全部捐獻給了福建閩侯（林森故鄉）中學作奬學金，資助優秀學生出國深造。
〖孑然一身〗
林森自從他的表妹為他殉情以後，他便開始信奉佛教。他信佛的方式與衆不同。林森的族侄兼秘書林履明回憶說：“林森是信佛的，但他並不註重形式。我在數十年中，經常去他寓所，從未見到那焚香拜佛，倒是常見他閉目養神，一如老僧入定那樣，口中念念有詞，卻從未聽到他出聲念佛，也沒有見到他講論佛道。他在廬山避暑，住在一幢普通的房子內，屋內蒼蠅甚多，他總是手持蠅拍，一拍一拍地打死許多蒼蠅。我想他肯定不是一個虔誠的佛教徒，否則豈能輕易殺生。”可見，林森信佛的目的僅是為了減輕內心的負罪感，排解心靈的苦痛與孤寂。1943年5月12日林森從林園坐車進城，去接受加拿大駐華大使呈遞國書。途中與一輛美國卡車相撞，林森受傷，被送進醫院後始終昏迷下醒，1943年8月1日，林森帶着對表妹的思念與負疚，在重慶一所醫院裏去世，走完了他的人生旅途。林森無子女，養子在抗戰中犧牲。生前孑然一身，死前沒有留下任何遺囑，死後亦無人為其披麻戴孝，頗為凄涼，國民政府為他舉行隆重國葬，安葬於重慶歌樂山雙河橋的陵園內。由於林森一貫主張抗日，所以得到了共産黨人的尊敬，中共中央緻唁電說：“林公領導抗戰，功在國傢”。《新華日報》發表社論《為元首逝世緻哀》，並舉行了公祭。重慶談判期間，毛澤東住在林園，早上起來散步時巧遇同樣出來散步的蔣介石，蔣介石領毛澤東參觀了林森墓，毛澤東對林森給予了高度的評價。
