　　夏太祖，名李继迁（963年－1004年），北宋党项族平夏部人，为银州防御使李光俨之子，出生地被称为李继迁寨。史书载，“生而有齿”。幼年时即以勇敢果断，“擅骑射，饶智数”而闻名乡里。975年，定难军节度使李光睿（继迁的族叔）爱其才，授年仅十二岁的继迁为管内都知蕃落使。982年，得知族兄李继捧入朝，被迫交出夏、绥、银、宥、静五州地以后，与弟李继冲、亲信张浦等人组织和带领党项放各部叛宋。后来李继迁派张浦带着重币到辽，向辽圣宗表示愿意归附，取得了辽的支持。河西素来都为北宋重地，辽圣宗为了削弱北宋在河西的控制权，授李继迁为定难军节度使、夏银绥宥静五州观察使、特进检校太师，都督夏州诸军事；以李继冲为副使。十二月，李继迁为了进一步取得辽的支持，亲自到辽边境请婚。当初李继捧献出夏、绥、银、宥、静地入朝并非本意，因此宋朝让他重返夏州之后，表面上敷衍宋朝，暗地却与继迁互相勾结，并于宋淳化二年（991年）以夏州之地附辽，被封为西平王。李继迁在李继捧的秘密配合下，连续出兵占据绥、银二州。接着，又攻庆、原（今甘肃固原县）诸州。但由于宋朝军队的强大反攻，不久即退出。
　　
　　宋真宗即位后，对继迁采取姑息忍让的政策，使他势力日益雄厚。1002年，李继迁集结重兵攻陷灵州（今宁夏灵武西南），杀灵州知州裴济。继迁以其祖先世爵西平王，而他本人又受辽册封为西平王，便改灵州名为西平府。继迁占据西平府以后，认为西平府北控河朔，南引庆凉，据诸路上游，扼守西陲要害。如能修城挖壕、练兵积粮，一旦四外出击，关中就无法法防备。百姓习华风，尚礼好学，可借此地为今后进取的资本，成一方之霸。平夏地方偏僻，不如西平府前途广大。于是令弟李继瑗和牙校李知白等，督领民众建造宫室、宗庙，暂定都于西平。
　　
　　在势力不断扩张下，胜利冲昏了继迁的头脑，开始变得傲慢轻敌。继迁扬言攻环（今甘肃环县）、庆二州，而暗中则移兵攻西凉，以声东击西的战术，袭破“畜牧甲天下”的西凉府。这时，归附宋朝的吐蕃族首领潘罗支向继迁伪降。张浦见其有诈，劝继迁说：“兵务慎重，贵审敌情。潘罗支多年来倔强不倨，现在兵锋未挫就归顺我们，完全是假的。不如将计就计将他消灭。”继迁自以为天下无敌，不听。潘罗支乘其不备，秘密集结归附宋朝的吐蕃兵数万人，大败党项兵于三十九井，继迁也身中箭矢，逃回西平。
　　
　　北宋景德元年（1004年）一月，李继迁伤势日重，自度性命难保。为了保住已有的割据地盘，一面要他儿子李德明上表宋朝要求归附，麻痹宋朝，一面又对亲信张浦等嘱咐说：“你们和我一起征战多年，谊同兄弟；我自幼生长兵间，历尽了艰苦。而今以灵、夏之众，虽不能和宋、辽争衡，但只要你们尽力辅佐，见机行事，也许可以保持旧业，为我祖先争取荣光。如能这样，我就没有什么遗憾了。”说完即死，年仅四十二岁。其长子李德明继位。夏太宗二年（1005年），李德明派兵杀了潘罗支，报了杀父之仇，上尊号应运法天神智仁圣至道广德孝光皇帝。其长孙夏景宗建国后，继迁被追尊为夏太祖，为一代伟大的创业者。谥神武皇帝。
