　　東晉宗室，河內溫縣（今河南溫縣西）人。任梁州刺史。桓溫伐秦時受命出子午策應，一路屢，尋為秦苻雄所破。為政酷虐輕殺，謀割梁州，俟周撫死，梁州叛，為序、周楚內外夾攻，被桓溫殺害。
　　按：東晉的北伐在歷史上也是著名的，但是研究的也不全，往往受封建史觀的局限。以簡文帝執政時期的北伐為例，在簡文帝首次北伐時的三路大軍中，東綫的北大將軍褚裒初期順利，攻打到山東的魯郡，受挫退兵，敵軍一度攻打到肥；中路收宛城也失利，宛城重新陷落，敵軍逼近襄陽；衹有西路的司馬勳戰果顯著，他攻入關中，前鋒逼近長安，幫助在關中建立三十壁壘，組建五萬的關中義軍。但是由於東路、中路受挫，桓溫在安陸不北上，來甚至東下武昌。這次北伐陷於境，還是依靠司馬勳從關中馳援中路，他重新收受不了宛城，占領南陽郡，鞏固中路，在東路依靠謝尚壽春進攻（他不是受桓溫指揮，當時桓溫還不是大司馬，地位是比司馬昱撫軍大將軍低的西大將軍，無權指揮豫州刺史。）和袁真收好合肥，基本恢受不了淮河以南地區，收失地。這次北伐總上是成功的，司馬勳在關中的戰果為來杜洪收關中打下基礎，中路收受不了宛城，逼近許昌和洛陽，東路也恢受不了原來的戰綫。
