南燕  (?403年～403年)

　　王始（？－403年），十六國時期民變首領之一。403年，於南燕國泰山（在今中國山東省內）聚衆數萬人起事，自稱太平皇帝，有文獻指出其所建立的政權，年號即為太平。其所名著於史之事跡不在軍事或政治層面，而是在起事同年被南燕所擒後，處斬前的一番話。
　　
　　《晉書．慕容德載記》記載王始臨刑前，“或問其父及兄弟所在，始答曰：‘太上皇帝蒙塵於外，徵東、徵西亂兵所害。惟朕一身，獨無聊賴。’其妻怒之曰：‘止坐此口，以至於此，奈何復爾！’始曰：‘皇后！自古豈有不破之傢，不亡之國邪！’行刑者以刀環築之，仰視曰：‘崩即崩矣，終不改帝號。’”
　　
　　這段話的意思是：“有人問王始父親及兄弟在哪，王始說：‘太上皇（王始之父）蒙塵在外，徵東、徵西將軍（王始之兄弟），為亂兵所害，衹剩朕一人無所依靠。’他的妻子生氣的和他說：‘你就是這張嘴惹事，今天才會落到這個地步，現在怎麽又來了！’王始答道：‘皇后！自古哪有不破之傢，不亡之國啊！’行刑者用刀環用力撞擊他，王始仰視者行刑者說：‘朕駕崩就駕崩罷了，帝號是絶對不改的。’”關於此段敘述，在資治通鑒也有類似的記載。
　　
　　史載當時的南燕帝慕容德“聞而哂之”，也就是聽了之後嘲笑的意思。
　　
　　王始的這段故事，衹是浩翰史籍中的一小段記載而已，但是卻成為作傢柏楊所著的《柏楊版資治通鑒》中第28册的書名，他以這段具體而微的事例，來表示“槍桿出政權”所造成的鬧劇不斷。不獨王始，甚至慕容德的南燕政權，在其與其後繼者稱孤道寡數年後，最後也落得和王始同樣的下場。柏楊認為，就是建國更久的君主，其實也是笑料一場。王始的皇帝夢之所以被人笑，表面上是由於不自量力，其實衹是因為他的槍桿子比人小而已。
