赫连勃勃（？—公元425年），匈奴族铁弗部，十六国时期夏国创建者。公元407年—425年在位。赫连勃勃骁勇剽悍，善骑射，多智谋，称雄漠北，早年归附后秦姚兴，深得姚兴信任。历任骁骑将军，奉车都尉，持节、安北将军，并封为五原公。后秦弘始八年（公元406年）出镇朔方。是年杀害岳父没亦干。弘始九年（公元407年）反叛后秦，起兵自立。称大单于，大夏天王，年号龙升，并改姓赫连氏。公元413年改元凤翔，在朔方水北、黑水之南营建都城，名曰统万（今靖边县北白城子），寓“统一天下，君临万邦”之意。同时重用后秦降将王买德为谋士，设置百官、衙署，建立健全国家制度，图谋发展。赫连勃勃生性残暴，草菅人命，杀戮无度。凡造兵器完成后必杀工匠，死者数千；经常自立城头，手执弓剑，见不顺眼者，辄杀之，臣下进谏，视为诽谤，先割舌头而后杀头。公元417年东晋围长安，后秦姚泓投降国亡。赫连勃勃乘晋军刘裕还军东返时，南下关中，占领长安。公元418年即帝位于霸上，改元昌武，又改为真兴，仍定都统万城，长安为南都，命太子赫连璝镇守，赫连璝为“领大将军，雍州牧、录南台尚书”等。后来赫连勃勃厌恶太子，想废掉赫连璝另立太子，赫连璝得知后起兵反，被其弟赫连昌所杀。于是赫连勃勃改立赫连昌为太子。公元425年赫连勃勃病死，谥武烈皇帝，庙号世祖，葬嘉平陵。赫连昌继位。427年，北魏攻取统万，次年，赫连昌被擒。431年夏亡。

赫连勃勃，字屈孑，匈奴右贤王去卑之后，刘元海之族也。曾祖武，刘聪世以宗室封楼烦公，拜安北将军、监鲜卑诸军事、丁零中郎将，雄据肆卢川。为代王猗卢所败，遂出塞表。祖豹子招集种落，复为诸部之雄，石季龙遣使就拜平北将军、左贤王、丁零单于。父卫辰入居塞内，苻坚以为西单于，督摄河西诸虏，屯于代来城。及坚国乱，遂有朔方之地，控弦之士三万八千。后魏师伐之，辰令其子力俟提距战，为魏所败。魏人乘胜济河，克代来，执辰杀之。勃勃乃奔于叱干部。叱干他斗伏送勃勃于魏。他斗伏兄子阿利先戍大洛川。闻将送勃勃，驰谏曰：“鸟雀投人，尚宜济免，况勃勃国破家亡，归命于我？纵不能容，犹宜任其所奔。今执而送之，深非仁者之举。”他斗伏惧为魏所责，弗从。阿利潜遣劲勇篡勃勃于路，送于姚兴高平公没奕于，奕于以女妻之。
勃勃身长八尺五寸，腰带十围，性辩慧，美风仪。兴见而奇之，深加礼敬，拜骁骑将军，加奉车都尉，常参军国大议，宠遇逾于勋旧。兴弟邕言于兴曰：“勃勃天性不仁，难以亲近。陛下宠遇太甚，臣窃惑之。”兴曰：“勃勃有济世之才，吾方收其艺用，与之共平天下，有何不可！”乃以勃勃为安远将军，封阳川侯，使助没奕于镇高平，以三城、朔方杂夷及卫辰部众三万配之，使为伐魏侦候。姚邕固谏以为不可。兴曰：“ 卿何以知其性气？”邕曰：“勃勃奉上慢，御众残，贪暴无亲，轻为去就，宠之逾分，终为边害。”兴乃止。顷之，以勃勃为持节、安北将军、五原公，配以三交五部鲜卑及杂虏二万余落，镇朔方。时河西鲜卑杜崘献马八千匹于姚兴，济河，至大城，勃勃留之，召其众三万余人伪猎高平川，袭杀没奕于而并其众，众至数万。
义熙三年，僭称天王、大单于，赦其境内，建元曰龙升，署置百官。自以匈奴夏后氏之苗裔也，国称大夏。以其长兄右地代为丞相、代公，次兄力俟提为大将军、魏公，叱干阿利为御史大夫、梁公，弟阿利罗引为征南将军、司隶校尉，若门为尚书令，叱以鞬为征西将军、尚书左仆射，乙斗为征北将军、尚书右仆射，自余以次授任。
其年，讨鲜卑薛干等三部，破之，降众万数千。进讨姚兴三城已北诸戍，斩其将杨丕、姚石生等。诸将谏固险，不从，又复言于勃勃曰：“陛下将欲经营宇内，南取长安，宜先固根本，使人心有所凭系，然后大业可成。高平险固，山川沃饶，可以都也。”勃勃曰：“卿徒知其一，未知其二。吾大业草创，众旅未多，姚兴亦一时之雄，关中未可图也。且其诸镇用命，我若专固一城，彼必并力于我，众非其敌，亡可立待。吾以云骑风驰，出其不意，救前则击其后，救后则击其前，使彼疲于奔命，我则游食自若，不及十年，岭北、河东尽我有也。待姚兴死后，徐取长安。姚泓凡弱小儿，擒之方略，已在吾计中矣。昔轩辕氏亦迁居无常二十余年，岂独我乎！”于是侵掠岭北，岭北诸城门不昼启。兴叹曰：“吾不用黄儿之言，以至于此！”黄儿，姚邕小字也。
勃勃初僭号，求婚于秃发傉檀，傉檀弗许。勃勃怒，率骑二万伐之，自杨非至于支阳三百余里，杀伤万余人，驱掠二万七千口、牛马羊数十万而还。亻辱檀率众追之，其将焦朗谓傉檀曰：“勃勃天姿雄骜，御军齐肃，未可轻也。今因抄掠之资，率思归之士，人自为战，难与争锋。不如从温围北渡，趣万斛堆，阻水结营，制其咽喉，百战百胜之术也。”傉檀将贺连怒曰：“勃勃以死亡之余，率乌合之众，犯顺结祸，幸有大功。今牛羊塞路，财宝若山，窘弊之余，人怀贪竞，不能督厉士众以抗我也。我以大军临之，必土崩鱼溃。今引军避之，示敌以弱。我众气锐，宜在速追。”傉檀曰：“ 吾追计决矣，敢谏者斩！”勃勃闻而大喜，乃于阳武下陕凿凌埋车以塞路。傉檀遣善射者射之，中勃勃左臂。勃勃乃勒众逆击，大败之，追奔八十余里，杀伤万计，斩其大将十余人，以为京观，号“髑髅台”，还于岭北。
勃勃与姚兴将张佛生战于青石原，又败之，俘斩五千七百人。兴遣将齐难率众二万来伐，勃勃退如河曲。难以去勃勃既远，纵兵掠野，勃勃潜军覆之，俘获七千余人，收其戎马兵杖。难引军而退，勃勃复追击于木城，拔之，擒难，俘其将士万有三千，戎马万匹。岭北夷夏降附者数万计，勃勃于是拜置守宰以抚之。勃勃又率骑二万入高冈，及于五井，掠平凉杂胡七千余户以配后军，进屯依力川。
姚兴来伐，至三城，勃勃候兴诸军未集，率骑击之。兴大惧，遣其将姚文宗距战，勃勃伪退，设伏以待之。兴遣其将姚榆生等追之，伏兵夹击，皆擒之。兴将王奚聚羌胡三千余户于敕奇堡，勃勃进攻之。奚骁悍有膂力，短兵接战，勃勃之众多为所伤。于是堰断其水，堡人窘迫，执奚出降。勃勃谓奚曰：“卿忠臣也！朕方与卿共平天下。”奚曰：“若蒙大恩，速死为惠。”乃与所亲数十人自刎而死。勃勃又攻兴将金洛生于黄石固，弥姐豪地于我罗城，皆拔之，徙七千余家于大城，以其丞相右地代领幽州牧以镇之。
遣其尚书金纂率骑一万攻平凉，姚兴来救，纂为兴所败，死之。勃勃兄子左将军罗提率步骑一万攻兴将姚广都于定阳，克之，坑将士四千余人，以女弱为军赏。拜广都为太常。勃勃又攻兴将姚寿都于清水城，寿都奔上邽，徙其人万六千家于大城。是岁，齐难、姚广都谋叛，皆诛之。
姚兴将姚详弃三城，南奔大苏。勃勃遣其将平东鹿奕于要击之，执详，尽俘其众。详至，勃勃数而斩之。
其年，勃勃率骑三万攻安定，与姚兴将杨佛嵩战于青石北原，败之，降其众四万五千，获戎马二万匹。进攻姚兴将党智隆于东乡，降之，署智隆光禄勋，徙其三千余户于贰城。姚兴镇北参军王买德来奔。勃勃谓买德曰：“朕大禹之后，世居幽、朔。祖宗重晖，常与汉、魏为敌国。中世不竞，受制于人。逮朕不肖，不能绍隆先构，国破家亡，流离漂虏。今将应运而兴，复大禹之业，卿以为何如？”买德曰：“自皇晋失统，神器南移，群雄岳峙，人怀问鼎，况陛下奕叶载德，重光朔野，神武超于汉皇，圣略迈于魏祖，而不于天启之机建成大业乎！今秦政虽衰，籓镇犹固，深愿蓄力待时，详而后举。”勃勃善之，拜军师中郎将。
乃赦其境内，改元为凤翔，以叱干阿利领将作大匠，发岭北夷夏十万人，于朔方水北、黑水之南营起都城。勃勃自言：“朕方统一天下，君临万邦，可以统万为名。”阿利性尤工巧，然残忍刻暴，乃蒸土筑城，锥入一寸，即杀作者而并筑之。勃勃以为忠，故委以营缮之任。又造五兵之器，精锐尤甚。既成呈之，工匠必有死者：射甲不入，即斩弓人；如其入也，便斩铠匠。又造百练刚刀，为龙雀大环，号曰“大夏龙雀”，铭其背曰：“古之利器，吴、楚湛卢。大夏龙雀，名冠神都。可以怀远，可以柔逋。如风靡草，威服九区。”世甚珍之。复铸铜为大鼓，飞廉、翁仲、铜驼、龙兽之属，皆以黄金饰之，列于宫殿之前。凡杀工匠数千，以是器物莫不精丽。
于是议讨乞伏炽磐。王买德谏曰：“明王之行师也，轨物以德，不以暴。且炽磐我之与国，新遭大丧，今若伐之，岂所谓乘理而动，上感灵和之义乎！苟恃众力，因人丧难，匹夫犹耻为之，而况万乘哉！”勃勃曰：“甚善。微卿，朕安闻此言！”
其年，下书曰：“朕之皇祖，自北迁幽、朔，姓改姒氏，音殊中国，故从母氏为刘。子而从母之姓，非礼也。古人氏族无常，或以因生为氏，或以王父之名。朕将以义易之。帝王者，系天为子，是为徽赫实与天连，今改姓曰赫连氏，庶协皇天之意，永享无疆大庆。系天之尊，不可令支庶同之，其非正统，皆以铁伐为氏，庶朕宗族子孙刚锐如铁，皆堪伐人。”立其妻梁氏为王后，子璝为太子，封子延阳平公，昌太原公，伦酒泉公，定平原公，满河南公，安中山公。
又攻姚兴将姚逵于杏城，二旬，克之，执逵及其将姚大用、姚安和、姚利仆、尹敌等，坑战士二万人。
遣其御史中丞乌洛孤盟于沮渠蒙逊曰：“自金晋数终，祸缠九服，赵、魏为长蛇之墟，秦、陇为豺狼之穴，二都神京，鞠为茂草，蠢尔群生，罔知凭赖。上天悔祸，运属二家，封疆密迩，道会义亲，宜敦和好，弘康世难。爰自终古，有国有家，非盟誓无以昭神祇之心，非断金无以定终始之好。然晋、楚之成，吴、蜀之约，咸口血未乾，而寻背之。今我二家，契殊曩日，言未发而有笃爱之心，音一交而怀倾盖之顾，息风尘之警，同克济之诚，戮力一心，共济六合。若天下有事，则双振义旗；区域既清，则并敦鲁、卫。夷险相赴，交易有无，爰及子孙，永崇斯好。”蒙逊遣其将沮渠汉平来盟。
勃勃闻姚泓将姚嵩与氐王杨盛相持，率骑四万袭上邽，未至而嵩为盛所杀。勃勃攻上邽，二旬克之，杀泓秦州剌史姚平都及将士五千人，毁城而去。进攻阴密，又杀兴将姚良子及将士万余人。以其子昌为使持节、前将军、雍州刺史，镇阴密。泓将姚恢弃安定，奔于长安，安定人胡俨、华韬率户五万据安定，降于勃勃。以俨为侍中，韬为尚书，留镇东羊苟儿镇之，配以鲜卑五千。进攻泓将姚谌于雍城，谌奔长安。勃勃进师次郿城，泓遣其将姚绍来距，勃勃退如安定。胡俨等袭杀苟儿，以城降泓。勃勃引归杏城，笑谓群臣曰：“刘裕伐秦，水陆兼进，且裕有高世之略，姚泓岂能自固！吾验以天时人事，必当克之。又其兄弟内叛，安可以距人！裕既克长安，利在速返，正可留子弟及诸将守关中。待裕发轸，吾取之若拾芥耳，不足复劳吾士马。”于是秣马厉兵，休养士卒。寻进据安定，姚泓岭北镇戍郡县悉降，勃勃于是尽有岭北之地。
俄而刘裕灭泓，入于长安，遣使遗勃勃书，请通和好，约为兄弟。勃勃命其中书侍郎皇甫徽为文而阴诵之，召裕使前，口授舍人为书，封以答裕。裕览其文而奇之，使者又言勃勃容仪瑰伟，英武绝人。裕叹曰：“吾所不如也！”既而勃勃还统万，裕留子义真镇长安而还。勃勃闻之，大悦，谓王买德曰：“朕将进图长安，卿试言取之方略。”买德曰：“刘裕灭秦，所谓以乱平乱，未有德政以济苍生。关中形胜之地，而以弱才小儿守之，非经远之规也。狼狈而返者，欲速成篡事耳，无暇有意于中原。陛下以顺伐逆，义贯幽显，百姓以君命望陛下义旗之至，以日为岁矣。青泥、上洛，南师之冲要，宜置游兵断其去来之路。然后杜潼关，塞崤、陕，绝其水陆之道。陛下声檄长安，申布恩泽，三辅父老皆壶浆以迎王师矣。义真独坐空城，逃窜无所，一旬之间必面缚麾下，所谓兵不血刃，不战而自定也。”勃勃善之，以子璝都督前锋诸军事，领抚军大将军，率骑二万南伐长安，前将军赫连昌屯兵潼关，以买德为抚军右长史，南断青泥，勃勃率大军继发。璝至渭阳，降者属路。义真遣龙骧将军沈田子率众逆战，不利而退，屯刘回堡。田子与义真司马王镇恶不平，因镇恶出城，遂杀之。义真又杀田子。于是悉召外军入于城中，闭门距守。关中郡县悉降。璝夜袭长安，不克。勃勃进据咸阳，长安樵采路绝。刘裕闻之，大惧，乃召义真东镇洛阳，以朱龄石为雍州刺史，守长安。义真大掠而东，至于灞上，百姓遂逐龄石，而迎勃勃入于长安。璝率众三万追击义真，王师败绩，义真单马而遁。买德获晋宁朔将军傅弘之、辅国将军蒯恩、义真司马毛脩之于青泥，积人头以为京观。于是勃勃大飨将士于长安，举觞谓王买德曰：“卿往日之言，一周而果效，可谓算无遗策矣。虽宗庙社稷之灵，亦卿谋献之力也。此觞所集，非卿而谁！”于是拜买德都官尚书，加冠军将军，封河阳侯。
赫连昌攻龄石及龙骧将军王敬于潼关之曹公故垒，克之，执龄石及敬送于长安。群臣乃劝进，勃勃曰：“朕无拨乱之才，不能弘济兆庶，自枕戈寝甲，十有二年，而四海未同，遗寇尚炽，不知何以谢责当年，垂之来叶！将明扬仄陋，以王位让之，然后归老朔方，琴书卒岁。皇帝之号，岂薄德所膺！”群臣固请，乃许之。于是为坛于灞上，僭即皇帝位，赦其境内，改元为昌武。遣其将叱奴侯提率步骑二万攻晋并州刺史毛德祖于蒲坂，德祖奔于洛阳。以侯提为并州刺史，镇蒲坂。
勃勃归于长安，征隐士京兆韦祖思。既至而恭惧过礼，勃勃怒曰：“吾以国士征汝，柰何以非类处吾！汝昔不拜姚兴，何独拜我？我今未死，汝犹不以我为帝王，吾死之后，汝辈弄笔，当置吾何地！”遂杀之。
群臣劝都长安，勃勃曰：“朕岂不知长安累帝旧都，有山河四塞之固！但荆、吴僻远，势不能为人之患。东魏与我同壤境，去北京裁数百余里，若都长安，北京恐有不守之忧。朕在统万，彼终不敢济河，诸卿适未见此耳！”其下咸曰：“非所及也。”乃于长安置南台，以璝领大将军、雍州牧、录南台尚书事。
勃勃还统万，以宫殿大成，于是赦其境内，又改元曰真兴。刻石都南，颂其功德，曰：
夫庸大德盛者，必建不刊之业；道积庆隆者，必享无穷之祚。昔在陶唐，数钟厄运，我皇祖大禹以至圣之姿，当经纶之会，凿龙门面辟伊阙，疏三江而决九河，夷一元之穷灾，拯六合之沈溺，鸿绩侔于天地，神功迈于造化，故二仪降祉，三灵叶赞，揖让受终，光启有夏。传世二十，历载四百，贤辟相承，哲王继轨，徽猷冠于玄古，高范焕乎畴昔。而道无常夷，数或屯险，王桀不纲，网漏殷氏，用使金晖绝于中天，神辔辍于促路。然纯曜未渝，庆绵万祀，龙飞漠南，凤峙朔北。长辔远驭，则西罩昆山之外；密网遐张，则东亘沧海之表。爰始逮今，二千余载，虽三统迭制于崤、函，五德革运于伊、洛，秦、雍成篡杀之墟，周、豫为争夺之薮，而幽朔谧尔，主有常尊于上；海代晏然，物无异望于下。故能控弦之众百有余万，跃马长驱，鼓行秦、赵，使中原疲于奔命，诸夏不得高枕，为日久矣。是以偏师暂拟，泾阳摧隆周之锋；赫斯一奋，平阳挫汉祖之锐。虽霸王继踪，犹朝日之升扶桑；英豪接踵，若夕月之登蒙汜。自开辟已来，未始闻也。非夫卜世与乾坤比长，鸿基与山岳齐固，孰能本枝于千叶，重光于万祀，履寒霜而逾荣，蒙重氛而弥耀者哉！
于是玄符告征，大猷有会，我皇诞命世之期，应天纵之运，仰协时来，俯顺时望。龙升北京，则义风盖于九区；凤翔天域，则威声格于八表。属奸雄鼎峙之秋，群凶岳立之际，昧旦临朝，日旰忘膳，运筹命将，举无遗策。亲御六戎，则有征无战。故伪秦以三世之资，丧魂于关、陇；河源望旗而委质，北虏钦风而纳款。德音著于柔服，威刑彰于伐叛，文教与武功并宣，俎豆与干戈俱运。五稔之间，道风弘著，暨乎七载而王猷允洽。乃远惟周文，启经始之基；近详山川，究形胜之地，遂营起都城，开建京邑。背名山而面洪流，左河津而右重塞。高隅隐日，崇墉际云，石郭天池，周绵千里。其为独守之形，险绝之状，固以远迈于咸阳，超美于周洛，若乃广五郊之义，尊七庙之制，崇左社之规，建右稷之礼，御太一以缮明堂，模帝坐而营路寝，阊阖披霄而山亭，象魏排虚而岳峙，华林灵沼，崇台秘室，通房连阁，驰道苑园，可以阴映万邦，光覆四海，莫不郁然并建，森然毕备，若紫微之带皇穹，阆风之跨后土。然宰司鼎臣，群黎士庶，佥以为重威之式，有阙前王。于是延王尔之奇工，命班输之妙匠，搜文梓于邓林，采绣石于恒岳，九域贡以金银，八方献其瑰宝，亲运神奇，参制规矩，营离宫于露寝之南，起别殿于永安之北。高构千寻，崇基万仞。玄栋镂榥，若腾虹之扬眉；飞檐舒咢，似翔鹏之矫翼。二序启矣，而五时之坐开；四隅陈设，而一御之位建。温宫胶葛，凉殿峥嵘，络以隋珠，綷以金镜，虽曦望互升于表，而中无昼夜之殊；阴阳迭更于外，而内无寒暑之别。故善目者不能为其名，博辩者不能究其称，斯盖神明之所规模，非人工之所经制。若乃寻名以求类，踪状以效真，据质以究名，形疑妙出，虽如来、须弥之宝塔，帝释、忉利之神宫，尚未足以喻其丽，方其饰矣。
昔周宣考室而咏于诗人，閟宫有侐而颂声是作。况乃太微肇制，清都启建，轨一文昌，旧章唯始，咸秩百神，宾享万国，群生开其耳目，天下咏其来苏，亦何得不播之管弦，刊之金石哉！乃树铭都邑，敷赞硕美，俾皇风振于来叶，圣庸垂乎不朽。其辞曰：
于赫灵祚，配乾比隆。巍巍大禹，堂堂圣功。仁被苍生，德格玄穹。帝锡玄珪，揖让受终。哲王继轨，光阐徽风。道无常夷，数或不竞。金精南迈，天辉北映。灵祉逾昌，世叶弥盛。惟祖惟父，克广休命。如彼日月，连光接镜。玄符瑞德，乾运有归。诞钟我后，应图龙飞。落落神武，恢恢圣姿。名教内敷，群妖外夷。化光四表，威截九围。封畿之制，王者常经。乃延输、尔，肇建帝京。土苞上壤，地跨胜形。庶人子来，不日而成。崇台霄峙，秀阙云亭。千榭连隅，万阁接屏。晃若晨曦，昭若列星。离宫既作，别宇云施。爰构崇明，仰准乾仪。悬薨风阅，飞轩云垂。温室嵯峨，层城参差。楹雕虬兽，节镂龙螭。莹以宝璞，饰以珍奇。称因褒著，名由实扬。伟哉皇室，盛矣厥章！义高灵台，美隆未央。迈轨三五，贻则霸王。永世垂节，亿载弥光。
其秘书监胡义周之辞也。名其南门曰朝宋门，东门曰招魏门，西门曰服凉门，北门曰平朔门。追尊其高祖训儿曰元皇帝，曾祖武曰景皇帝，祖豹子曰宣皇帝，父卫辰曰桓皇帝，庙号太祖，母苻氏曰桓文皇后。
勃勃性凶暴好杀，无顺守之规。常居城上，置弓剑于侧，有所嫌忿，便手自杀之，群臣忤视者毁其目，笑者决其脣，谏者谓之诽谤，先截其舌而后斩之。夷夏嚣然，人无生赖。在位十三年而宋受禅，以宋元嘉二年死。子昌嗣伪位，寻为魏所擒。弟定僭号于平凉，遂为魏所灭。自勃勃至定，凡二十有六载而亡。
史臣曰：赫连勃勃犭熏丑种类，入居边宇，属中壤分崩，缘间肆慝，控弦鸣镝，据有朔方。遂乃法玄象以开宫，拟神京而建社，窃先王之徽号，备中国之礼容，驱驾英贤，窥窬天下。然其器识高爽，风骨魁奇，姚兴睹之而醉心，宋祖闻之而动色。岂阴山之韫异气，不然何以致斯乎！虽雄略过人，而凶残未革，饰非距谏，酷害朝臣，部内嚣然，忠良卷舌。灭亡之祸，宜在厥身，犹及其嗣，非不幸也。
赞曰：淳维远裔，名王之余。啸群龙漠，乘衅侵渔。爰创宫宇，易彼毡庐。虽弄神器，犹曰凶渠。
