* 1289年，被册立為皇太子。
* 1298年，因父親伏見天皇的讓位而登基為天皇。由伏見天皇實行院政。
* 1301年，讓位於大覺寺統的二條天皇，成為伏見上皇。
* 1308年，於其弟富仁親王即位為花園天皇，之伏見上皇停止院政，而伏見上皇也在1313年到1318年之間實行院政。
o 花園天皇在位期間，幕府居中調停持明院統和大覺寺統之間為爭奪皇位的激烈爭，决定往由兩方皇族輪流出任天皇。
* 1318年，大覺寺統的醍醐天皇即位决定親政，因而造成幕府的反感，於是在1331年，鐮倉幕府違背當初居中調停的結果，擁立皇后伏見上皇的皇子－量仁親王即位為光嚴天皇，再度由伏見上皇實行院政。
* 1333年，室町幕府將軍足利尊氏態度轉變，逼迫光嚴天皇讓位於光明天皇，伏見上皇便停止院政，出成為法皇。
* 1336年，崩。
