略历
万寿2年(1025年)8月3日诞生,2日后生母东宫妃嬉子即逝世。长元9年(1036年)2月22日亲王宣下。长历元年(1037年)7月2日行元服礼并叙三品。同年8月17日被立为皇太子。宽德2年(1045年)4月8日即位。治暦4年(1068年)4月19日崩御,享年44岁。
后冷泉天皇以两位藤原氏一族的女子为皇后,其中藤原欢子生下了皇子却在出生当日夭折,因而后冷泉天皇死后没有皇子能继位,于是由异母弟即位为后三条天皇,由于后三条天皇与藤原氏没有外戚关系,再加上自从后冷泉天皇的生母藤原嬉子逝世后,宫中所有藤原氏的女子就没有人能够怀孕,因此造成藤原氏一族的权力衰退。

后冷泉天皇是日本历代天皇中唯一一位三后并立的天皇。 虽然在后冷泉天皇以后的鸟羽天皇、二条天皇、后堀河天皇也都拥有三名皇后,但三个皇后的在位期间是错开的,并无重复,后冷泉天皇却是同时有三个皇后在位。
最早入宫的是章子内亲王,位号为中宫。之后在藤原宽子入宫时,依惯例,章子将升为名义上地位较高的皇后,中宫之位则由宽子接任,但章子希望保留中宫身分,因此由宽子成为皇后,章子仍为中宫。治历4年(1068年)4月,在后冷泉天皇逝世前夕,准后女御的藤原欢子成为皇后。欢子成为皇后后,依入宫顺序三后的身分改为:中宫章子成为皇太后、宽子皇后为中宫,欢子仍称皇后。改号后2日,后冷泉天皇逝世。
