　　天照大神（《日本書紀》稱法），亦稱天照大禦神（《古事記》稱法）、天照皇大神、日神，是日本神話中高天原的統治者與太陽女神。她被奉為今日日本天皇的始祖，也是神道最高神祇。

　　根據《古事記》與《日本書紀》記載，天照大神是從日本神話中開天闢地之祖伊奘諾尊（《古事記》裏稱為伊邪那岐）眼中誕生：伊奘諾尊思念難産而死的妹妹兼愛妻伊奘冉尊（《古事記》裏稱為伊邪那美），親赴黃泉國。但看見她腐爛而醜陋的身軀後，因感到惡心與畏懼，遂逃離黃泉國。憤怒的伊邪那美派出數將追擊，但被他用計甩開，最後在黃泉比良坂用大石堵住陰陽兩界之路，纔停止這場災難。
　　
　　這時疲憊的伊奘諾尊停在日嚮國的橘小戶阿波岐原休息，他脫去身上的衣物跳入河流中遊洗滌，於是他脫掉的衣物與洗滌的部位頓時生出二十多位神祇。最後洗臉時，左眼生出掌管太陽的天照大神，右眼生出掌管月亮的月夜見尊（《古事記》裏稱為月讀），鼻孔生出素盞嗚尊（《古事記》裏稱為須佐之男）。伊奘諾尊便令天照大神治理高天原，月讀治理夜之食原，素盞嗚尊治理海原。

　　天照大神在天上時發現地上的葦原中國有保食神將來，令弟弟月夜見尊前去迎接。保食神來到後便轉頭，面對陸地的方向吐出米飯，又面會海洋的方向吐出各種魚類，等吐出各種食物後，便存起來準備庭宴時供大傢發享。見此情狀，月夜見尊臉色大變，指責保食神居然拿吐出來的食物給他吃，隨即拔劍殺之，然後把這件事告訴天照大神。天照大神聽後很生氣，大駡月夜見尊一頓後不再見面，從此日月相隔出現。
　　
　　之後天照大神派天熊人去看保食神的屍首，衹見頭頂化為牛馬，頭殼長出小米，眉毛長出蠶繭，眼睛長出稗，肚子長出稻米，下陰長出小麥、大豆和紅豆。天熊人將這些物品取下來獻給天照大神，天照大神把這些食物與絲品交給定天邑君管理，從此天下有養蠶與可耕種的𠔌物。
　　
　　天照大神與月夜見尊都接受父親的命令，到自己的領地。唯獨素盞嗚尊因思念母親伊奘冉尊而泣，被伊奘諾尊放逐。被放逐的素盞嗚尊赴黃泉國見母前，决定先去高天原找其姊天照大神，但他行走時山川與諸土震動，反而驚動了天照大神。她以為他要侵占高天原，全副武裝準備迎戰。素盞嗚尊到達後說明來意，天照大神仍些許懷疑，於是兩人以生子為證；天照大神拿素盞嗚尊的十拳劍折成三段，用河水衝洗後放入口中咬碎，然後吐出霧氣，隨之生出三女神：田心姬（《古事記》稱為多紀理姬命）、湍津姬（《古事記》稱為市寸鳩姬命）和市杵島姬（《古事記》稱為多岐都姬命）。

　　2006年，遊戲生産商CAPCOM發佈了由Clover Studio製作的一個名為“大神”的PS2電視遊戲，該遊戲主角以“天照大神”作為原型。
