個人簡介
秦莊襄王為秦孝文王之子，秦王政（秦始皇帝）之父。孝文王死後繼位。在位三年，病死。葬於葚。
異人曾在年輕時作為人質居住於趙國都城邯鄲，因為秦國屢次攻趙，他的處境很睏難。這時，有個衛國大商人呂不韋知道了他的情況，認為他是“奇貨可居”，决定進行一次政治賭博，於是，設法結識了他，成為密友。呂不韋用重金買通了太子安國君(秦孝文王)寵愛的華陽夫人，使她勸說安國君立子異人為嫡嗣。為了博得出生於楚國的華陽夫人的歡心，子異人在呂不韋的授意下，改名為楚。公元前250年．秦孝文王繼位三天後突然中毒而死，子異人繼位。
異人繼位後，尊華陽夫人為太後；拜呂不韋為相邦，封文信侯，食洛陽十萬戶，執掌朝政大權。當時，東周王朝境內的小封國西周公國已經於公元前256年被秦軍所滅，周顯王病死，西周公被遷於但狐聚（今河南省臨汝縣西北），小封國東周公國還存在。公元前249年，東周君聯絡諸侯，謀劃伐秦。異人獲悉，立即派呂不韋統領10萬大軍，一舉攻滅了東周七邑，遷東周公於陽人聚（今河南省臨汝縣西）。東周王朝的最後殘餘被鏟除。接着，秦軍繼續蠶食三晉，又攻占了大片土地。

奇貨可居
由於他的母親並非安國君(當時在位的秦昭襄王世子，即後來的秦孝文王)所寵愛的妃子，加上安國君有兒子二十多人，故被送去趙國為人質，稱為“質子”。當時秦趙兩國不時交戰，故他在趙國為質子之時，受到的待遇很差。當時在趙國的商人呂不韋富甲天下，遇見異人的時候，以為“奇貨可居”。呂不韋認為，衹要為異人在秦國爭取到安國君繼承人的地位，他日異人為王，即可使呂不韋的獲利不計其數。呂不韋照顧異人，加以栽培，把自己寵愛的歌姬趙姬獻給異人，得異人鐘愛。呂不韋並為異人到秦國爭取安國君所寵愛而沒有兒子的華陽夫人歡心，成功令安國君以異人為世子，安國君即位為孝文王一年而駕崩，異人繼位為秦王。
莊襄王在位三年，以呂不韋為相國。並立他與趙姬所生的兒子王子趙政為世子。
莊襄王三年（前247年）五月丙午駕崩，享年三十五歲，他突如其來的早逝，有人認為是因為他撞破了呂不韋與趙姬的姦情而被呂不韋所殺。
秦王趙政稱皇帝尊號後，追封莊襄王為太上皇。
《史記》記載
