阿来1959 年阿来生于四川西北部藏区只有20多户人家的小山寨。
阿来初中毕业回乡务农，后考入马尔康师范学校。中专师范，遂成迄今为止最高学历。毕业后做中学教师近五年。
1982 年开始诗歌创作。80年代中期以后，逐渐转向小说，并调到阿坝州文化局所属的文学杂志《草地》当编辑。
1996 年阿来辞职，应聘至成都《科幻世界》杂志，从普通编辑干起，1998年成为主编，统领至今，现下辖《科幻世界》、《飞》等杂志共计六种。
1994年冬，阿来完成长篇小说《尘埃落定》。1998年由人民文学出版社出版，摘取2000年第五届“茅盾文学奖”，成为中国最年轻的茅盾文学奖获得者。
