1164, when Henry II attempted to recover the church's judicial power also, he and his former close friend and adviser, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket conflict. Beckett requested the Pope's intervention angered Henry II. December 29, 1170, four baron knights, apparently in support of Henry, the assassination of Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. Pope Alexander III threatened to impose excommunication against Henry II. Henry had to yield, he was asked to repent, and pledged to lead the Crusaders to Palestine.
