《锻炼》是五部连贯的长篇小说的第一部。原拟第二部写保卫大武汉之战至皖南事变止，包含保卫大武汉时期民主与反民主的斗争，武汉撤守，汪精卫落水，工业迁川后之短期繁荣，重庆大轰炸（五三、五四）。国民党政府"防范奸党、异党条例"之公布，国民党人之"不抗战止于亡国，抗战则将亡党"之怪论等等。第三部预定内容为太平洋战争之爆发，中原战争，湘桂战争，工业之短时繁荣已成过去，物价高涨，国民党特务活动之加强，检查书报之加强，发国难财者甚多，国际风云对中国战局之影响等等。第四部包含经济恐慌之加深，国民党与日本图谋妥协，民主运动之高涨，进攻陕甘宁边区之尝试，国际反动派之日渐嚣张。第五部为"惨胜"（当时人们称抗日战争的胜利为惨胜）至闻、李被暗杀。各部的人物大致即第一部《锻炼》的人物，稍有增添。这五部连贯的小说，企图把从抗战开始至"惨胜"前后的八年中的重大政治、经济、民主与反民主、特务活动与反特斗争等等，作个全面的描写。可是刚写完第一部，即《锻炼》，就因为中国共产党已经不但解放了东北三省，且包围天津，北平，欲召开政治协商会议而布置了我们在香港的民主人士经海道赴大连。大约于一九四八年尾我离香港，因此不得不中断此书写作计划，而只成了第一部《锻炼》。现在整理旧稿，加了两章，写上海的官办难民收容所中的凄惨情景。《锻炼》所写的是四十年前的中国社会，现在的中年人和青年人是不曾经过的，值此中华人民共和国三十周年国庆之日，作者写此小序，也不胜感慨系之。
