一
小學教科書給了我最初對於狗的印象。
“犬守夜。”
原來狗是叫做犬的，後來叫做狗了。但不對，狗總是狗，秦皇、漢武之世，大約 也還是叫狗的，不過前時印在書上的狗稱呼，全用的是“犬”字，自從大狗叫小狗跳 的教科書通行以後，關於狗的描敘，似乎就很少用“犬”了。
犬與狗，狗與犬，本是一樣動物的兩個名詞，頂多衹不過是稱謂上的不同，它的 守夜之責，似乎倒是早就為人規定了，嚮別人討要狗仔的人，也多半說預備留它來看 門守夜的。

屠格涅夫的《獵人日記》，寫過打獵的場面，連托爾斯泰那部輝煌巨著《戰爭與 和平》裏，也寫上了貴族們如何打獵的。在打獵中，最缺少不下的就是那些獵狗。他 們捕捉那些受傷的弱小禽獸，傾出全部的虐殺狂，結果偏又裝出馴服到傢的樣子，銜 着血淋淋的獵獲品，呈獻給他的主人，看它們搖着獻媚的尾巴，正是為的討取歡心。

如今我們且先看看鄉下的狗。
