《鍛煉》是五部連貫的長篇小說的第一部。原擬第二部寫保衛大武漢之戰至皖南事變止，包含保衛大武漢時期民主與反民主的鬥爭，武漢撤守，汪精衛落水，工業遷川後之短期繁榮，重慶大轟炸（五三、五四）。國民黨政府"防範姦黨、異黨條例"之公佈，國民黨人之"不抗戰止於亡國，抗戰則將亡黨"之怪論等等。第三部預定內容為太平洋戰爭之爆發，中原戰爭，湘桂戰爭，工業之短時繁榮已成過去，物價高漲，國民黨特務活動之加強，檢查書報之加強，發國難財者甚多，國際風雲對中國戰局之影響等等。第四部包含經濟恐慌之加深，國民黨與日本圖謀妥協，民主運動之高漲，進攻陝甘寧邊區之嘗試，國際反動派之日漸囂張。第五部為"慘勝"（當時人們稱抗日戰爭的勝利為慘勝）至聞、李被暗殺。各部的人物大致即第一部《鍛煉》的人物，稍有增添。這五部連貫的小說，企圖把從抗戰開始至"慘勝"前後的八年中的重大政治、經濟、民主與反民主、特務活動與反特鬥爭等等，作個全面的描寫。可是剛寫完第一部，即《鍛煉》，就因為中國共産黨已經不但解放了東北三省，且包圍天津，北平，欲召開政治協商會議而佈置了我們在香港的民主人士經海道赴大連。大約於一九四八年尾我離香港，因此不得不中斷此書寫作計劃，而衹成了第一部《鍛煉》。現在整理舊稿，加了兩章，寫上海的官辦難民收容所中的凄慘情景。《鍛煉》所寫的是四十年前的中國社會，現在的中年人和青年人是不曾經過的，值此中華人民共和國三十周年國慶之日，作者寫此小序，也不勝感慨係之。

"Exercise" is a novel of five consecutive first.
