散曲和杂剧
提到曲，人们一般都认为就是指元曲，实际上在这里谈到的曲是广义的戏曲。戏曲艺术在中国文学史上乃至整个中华文化中都占有非常重要的地位，它的成就并不逊于诗、词和赋。 谈及戏曲，人们难免就会联想到一个“俗”字。当然，这里所说的“俗”，并不是指俗气、鄙陋，它们相对于高雅、雅致的“雅”而言，是指通俗、质朴。戏曲不只有俗的一面，同时也有雅的一面，是有雅有俗、雅俗共赏的。
元曲与唐诗、宋词和汉赋并称为中国文学艺术百花园中最绚丽多彩的四株奇葩。在经历了宋元时期的繁盛后，明代的戏曲出现了“雅化”的趋势，由于创作中心的南移和南戏的再度兴盛，明代杂剧和传奇的发展都呈现出南曲化的倾向。尤其是在明代中期以后，“昆腔代弋”的变化更使得戏曲的创作走向案头，逐渐成为一种文人文学形式，步入典雅的道路。清代由于地方戏曲的兴盛，传统意义上的杂剧和传奇都由盛而衰，但是也出现了洪?N和孔尚任这样的大家。到清代后期，地方戏曲的发展更是一曰千里，中国戏曲最初源于民间，最终亦在民间再度勃兴，形成了更为广泛的艺术形式。
