  道并非宗教,而是古代人对自然的认识。古代的“道学”与今天的“科学”分属于形而上与形而下两个层次。道研究的对象是形而上;而科学研究的是形而下。道是宇宙本体存在与变化的规律;科学则是三维物质世界的存在与变化的规律。
  和道相对应,组成道教教义的核心。《道教义枢·道义》称“道一体,而其二义,一而不一,二而不二”。《道经》中有“”字四十一处,提出了“上”、“玄”、“孔”、“积”等等,“孔之容,惟道是从”,即大只服从于道。第五十一章称:“道生之,畜之,物形之,势成之。是以万物莫不尊道而贵。道之尊,之贵,夫莫之命而常自然”。其中将“道”和“”两者规定为“生长万物”和“畜养万物”的关系。
  因此,一般认为“者,道之功也”(韩非语),“者,道之用也”(陆明语),“者,道之见也”(苏辙语)。《庄子》的《天地篇》就说到:“通于天地者,也;行于万物者,道也。”并称:“形非道不生,生非不明。存形穷生,立明道,非至者邪?”当代旅美华人学者陈鼓先生将归纳为三点:一是“道所显现于物的功能”;二是“内在于万物的道,在一切事物中表现它的属性,亦即表现它的”;三是“道落实到人生层面时,称之为”,即通常说的人的“行”。早期道教沿用了先秦道家的学说。太平道的《太平经》卷五十六至六十四称,“道者,天也,阳也,主生;者,地也,阴也,主养。……夫道兴者主生,万物悉生;兴者主养,万物人民悉养,无冤结”。这里也将道和两者解释为“生长万物”和“畜养万物”的关系,同《道经》的思想一脉相承。
  太平道从追求“太平”的社会理想出发,将“主养”的观点推广到社会政治领域,认为“地以治,故忍辱;人以和治,故进退多便”,“以治者,进退两度也”。并且将“治”列为帮助帝王之治的“十法”的第四法,仅次于“元气冶、自然治、道治”。
  《太平经》认为“”和“刑”相对立,称“者与生气同力,故生气出亦出,入亦入;刑与杀气同力,故杀气出亦出,入亦入。与天上行同列,刑与地下行同列。常与实者同处,刑与空无物同处。常与兴同处,故外兴则出,内兴则入,故冬入夏出。刑与衰死气同处,故冬出而夏入。死气者清,故所居而清也。故与帝王同气,故外王则出阴,内王则入刑;刑与小人同位,故所居而无士众也。物所归者,积帝王,常见归,故称帝王也;刑未尝与物同处,无士众,故不得称君子”。君子的服人依靠的是“道”与“”,欲得天地之心的,也要行“道”与“”,至于行“严畏智诈”之术,只能收服那些言行无状的小人。《太平经》还将“主养”的观点推广到个人的修养上,批评“人不力学,名为无之人”,无之人必“好害伤”,因此,是“凶败之符”,是“最劣弱困穷小人之名字”。这种人是“天不爱,地不喜,人不欲亲近之”,他们“为王者致害,为君子致灾,鬼神承天教,不久与为治”。五斗米道的《老子想尔注》中,亦有多处对于“”的阐述。注“玄”为“玄,天也。常法道行如此,欲令人法也”;注“常”为“道常在”,可见,五斗米道是主张“道一体”的,“”就是“道”的意思。
  魏晋南北朝时期,道教教义着重在宇宙观、社会观和神仙观方面的建设。《西升经》就是以体用关系阐述“道”和“”的关系的,称“道以无为上,以仁为主”。刘仁会注解说:“宥物于无者,道也;仁物之性者,也”。“”也就是“道”体现于“物”之中的属性——“仁”。《西升经》中还有“道非欲于虚,虚自归之;非欲于神,神自归之”,“无心留而鬼神伏矣”。这里的“神”,既有人“神”的意思,又有“神灵”之神的意思。唐代李荣注解说:“道既虚无,亦神妙。虚无神梦,毕竟清静。而人若能虚心无身,自然归道;抱神守妙,自然归也。”又注称:“圣人无心,不起贪欲,道在于己,止于身,故曰:留也。用道,则道流遐迩;怀,则被幽明,既为人之所归,亦为鬼神之所伏从也。”因此,人能归道,也就归是人的精神的根本,办使鬼神降伏。但是,同期的江南一带的道教却大多从一般的“道”观念阐述“”。葛洪的《抱朴子内篇》要求个人“积善阴”,这个“”解释为“积善立功,慈心于物,恕己及人,乐人之吉,愍人之苦,赒人之急,救人之灾”,而治国之君以及忠臣辅佐则应修道;使“道普溢”,至于太平。唐代,道教教义体系逐渐充实完备。吴筠在《玄纲论》中称:“尝试论之,天地、人物、灵仙、鬼神,非道无以生,非无以成”,吴筠认为:“者,何也?天地所禀,阴阳所资,经以五行,纬以四时,牧之以君,训之以师,幽明动植,咸畅其宜。泽流无穷,群生不知谢其功;惠加无极,百姓不知赖其力,此之谓也。”这就将天地阴阳幽明的一切生成物都视为“”成之物,包括“灵仙、鬼神”。唐宋以后,道教教义着重探讨人的问题。宋徽宗注《西升经》有《序》称:“万物莫不由之之谓道,道之在我之谓。道,人所固有也。”这就将“道”和“”视为人所共有的禀赋。古时,“”和“得”相通,因此,混然子王道渊认为:“者,得也,心之所蓄,性之混融,开物成务之理也。”一些有“上”的圣人,“未尝显己之有,藏身潜迹,抱朴含光,专气致柔,如婴儿也”,而“下”的贤人,“执著其事,唯于世情,是非得失之物,理论扬于己,以被聪明所蔽”。因此,有之人,就应该“含养性,纯纯朴朴,则比如赤子也,赤子如初生婴儿也”。认为:“太上以此喻修真之士,心切切矣。
  我辈欲反本还源,归根复命,以此为则,不亦简妙乎。今心无所主,性不安闲,安得元神凝寂,元气冲虚而比如赤子乎。”唐代内丹家们多将“道”和个人的内丹修炼相结合,认为“道”与“生”的结合就是“”。司马承祯说过:“生者,天之大也,地之大乐也,人之大福也。”又称:“养生者,慎勿失道;为道者,慎勿失生。使道与生相守,生与道相保,二者不相离,然后乃长久。言长久者,得道之质也。”因此,“大人含光藏晖,以期全备,凝神宝气,学道无心,神与道合,谓之得道”。清代道士、著名的内丹家柳华阳则称:“道者之用,者道之体,人能明乎其,而天性自现,体乎其道,而冲和自运,是之谓寂然不动,感而遂能也。”又称:“古圣云:者,性能中求之耳。夫非道则无著,道非则无主。
  道外觅,其远矣;培体道,其功切矣。”柳华阳在内修实践中曾经以“道体用观”指导其内修实践,自谓:“吾尝自内观而无心,外觅而无体,飘飘乎寻之不得,恍恍乎觉而虚灵,似鱼之随水,如雾之笼烟,一派冲和,荣卫天地,但人不能深进,故本然之道味却矣。”另一些内丹家则从内修角度认识和解释《道经》,将内修理论置于道教教义系统之下。清代道士、著名内丹家刘一明在《修真九要》中,强调内丹修炼必须“积修行”,认为“”就是“恤老怜贫,惜孤悯寡,施药舍茶,修桥补路,扶危救困,轻财重义,广行方便”,称“道者,为己之事;者,为人之事。修道有尽而积无穷”,感叹“者,自己人世之事;道者,师传成仙之事。不积而欲修道,人事且不能,仙道怎得成”?刘一明在《修真辩难》中,对“上”则完全从内丹学的角度来解释。他认为:“先天全,则为上;先天亏,则为下。”所谓“先天全”,就是“体全备,乾阳未伤之人”,就是“未伤先天之阳”。所谓“先天亏”,就是“先天已散,五行各分,四象不和,诸般宝物皆失”。刘一明还批评了当时某些内丹家的谬指,即称“精漏者为下,精全者为上”。由此可见,在内丹家的修炼理论系统中,“”已经衍化为“精”和“先天之阳”的同义语了。
  值得注意的是,社会关系中“道”的内涵与修炼意义上的“道”有本质的不同。这个“道”是社会秩序而非“天序”;是统治阶级意志而非“天意”——自然规律。“道”在封建社会就是封建等级制度;“”则是体现维护封建等级制度的功能。例如“女子无才便是”的“”,实质上体现和捍卫的正是封建社会中男性的利益,其功能则是保障私有财产严格按照血缘关系继承。这是封建社会价值观的集中体现。
