1982.1-1984.2在华中农业大学微生物专业毕业后留校任助教;1984.2-1988.5在英国University of East Anglia注册,在英国John Innes 研究中心获博士学位,并做博后研究一年;1988.6-1991.12在华中农业大学任讲师;1991.12-1992.8在华中农业大学任副教授;1992.8-2000.7在华中农业大学任教授,1993年遴选为博导;2000.7始任上海交通大学教授、博导,Bio-X生命科学研究中心副主任。2005年任教育部微生物代谢工程重点实验室主任。2001-2003兼美国康乃尔大学客座教授;现任《科学通报》、《Process Biochemistry》等数个国内外刊物特邀编辑或编委会成员。2006年起任国际工业微生物遗传学组织专家委员会(GIM-IC)委员。
