　　“是你，侯桂英。”他嘎声的说了。心不觉的跳得快了起来。 　　侯桂英是他间壁的青联主任的妻子，丈夫才十八岁，而二十三岁了的她却总不欢喜，她 　　曾提出过离婚。她是妇联会的委员，现已被提为参议会的候选人。 　　这是第三次还是第四次了，当他晚上起来喂牲口时，她也跟着来喂，而且总跟过来说几 　　句话，即使白天见了，她也总是眯着她那单眼皮的长眼笑。他讨厌她，恨她，有时就恨不得 　　抓过来把她撕开把她压碎。 　　月亮光落在剪了的发上，落在敞开的脖子上，牙齿轻轻的咬着嘴唇，她望着他。他也呆 　　立在那里。 　　“你……” 　　他感到一个可怕的东西在自己身上生长出来了，他几乎要去做一件吓人的事，他可以什 　　么都不怕的。但忽然另一个东西压住了他，他截断了她说道： 　　“不行的，侯桂英，你快要做议员了，咱们都是干部，要受批评的。”于是推开了她， 　　头也不回的，走进自己的窑里去。老婆已经坐到炕上，好像还在流眼泪。 　　“唉！”他长长的抽了一口气，躺到了炕上。 　　像经过了一件大事后的那么有着应有的镇静。像想着别人的事件似的想着适才的事。他 　　觉得很满意。于是他喊他的老婆：“睡吧，牛还没有养仔呢，怕要到明天。” 　　老婆看见他在说话了，便停止了哭泣。吹熄了灯。 　　“这老家伙终是不成的，好，就让她烧烧饭吧。闹离婚印象不好。” 　　然而院子里的鸡叫了。老婆已脱了衣服，躺在他侧边，她唠叨的问着：“明天还要出去 　　么？什么开不完的会……” 　　“牛是又怕侍候不成了……”但他已经没有很多时间来想牛的事，他需要睡眠，他阖着 　　眼，努力去找瞌睡，却只见一些会场，一些群众，而且听到什么“宣传工作不够罗，农村落 　　后呀，妇女工作等于零……”等等的话。他一想到这里，就免不了烦躁，如何能把农村弄好 　　呢，这里没有做工作的人呀。他自己是个什么呢，他什么也不懂。他没有住过学，不识字， 　　他连儿子都没有一个，而现在他做了乡的指导员，他明天还要报告开会意义……。 　　“第一要发扬民主才能抗战胜利；第二，三三制就是……” 　　窗户纸在慢慢变白，间壁已经有人起身了。而何华明却刚刚沉入在半睡眠状态中，黄瘦 　　的老婆已经睡熟了，有一滴眼泪嵌在那凹下去了的眼角上。猫又睡在更侧边，沉沉的打着 　　然而作品的主旨之一在于颂扬主人公最终自觉的以一种新的道德观念去压抑情感和克服 　　思想矛盾，这又表明作者在基本接受了另一种意识形态之后对于某种普遍的人生现象有了相 　　异于本人先前的认识。从这一意义上说，这篇小说的思想价值和艺术成就，主要表现为对于 　　上述矛盾冲突被克服的过程中的那种浸染着痛苦的复杂情愫的充分揭示，而对于这一点，当 　　时根据地的其他作家作品是未予认识和关注的。 阅读《夜
